The Son of David: Seeing Jesus in the Historical Books (A 10-week Bible Study) (Volume 3)

Nancy Guthrie does it again. I have completed 3 of her 5 OT studies, this one being my fourth, as well as her Blessed study on Revelation. Nancy writes in a way that is approachable and accessible for the new believer as well as the seasoned theologian. Her focus, connecting the Old Testament to Christ’s fulfillment, is Scripturally sound. Her writing style is approachable yet still challenging and causes me to stop and think. She provides application along the way-opportunity to take what one learns in Scripture and apply that knowledge to how we live. I appreciate that we are pointed to the Biblical text first through personal Bible study questions and then she expounds on it, going verse by verse, through the Biblical text.

This is Nancy Guthrie's latest book in her series on Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament books. It is actually the third book in the series. I have been working through "The Promised One" and have been very pleased with how she brings insight from the lives of each historical person, such as Abraham and their situations and connects them to the New Testament accounts of what Jesus did and the what He accomplished for us. As I read through the Old Testament now, I am looking for and seeing how there is a beautiful tapestry throughout, pointing to Jesus' coming and fulfillment. I'm very pleased with this series. The first book: The Promised One: Seeing Jesus in Genesis. The second book: "The Lamb of God: Seeing Jesus in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers & Deuteronomy. The Third book: The Son of David: Seeing Jesus in the Historical Books. The Fourth book: The Wisdom of God: Seeing Jesus in the Psalms & Wisdom Books. Each of these books are a 10-week Bible Study. Each book has three sections: Personal Bible Study, Teaching Chapter and Discussion Questions. She also has a dvd for each study as well. The dvd is the Teaching Chapter, word for word. Both have great value. For our bible study, we all read on our own, but used the dvd when we came together, enabling someone new to join us that didn't have the book.

Just finished this study with a group of ladies from our church. (Our group is actually beginning the author's study of Hebrews next.) I know that there seems to be strong opinions among some that the Old Testament is not relevant in the 21st century. Nothing could be further from the truth! And Nancy Guthrie hits a home run in proving that point! From Genesis to Revelation, it's all about jesus. If you will diligently study God's Word, and seek Him with your whole heart, you will find Him. Nancy's book is great tool to help you do just that.

This has been an excellent study for our women’s Bible study that includes both seekers and long time believers. Nancy Guthrie beautifully connects and contrasts the heroes of the Old Testament with Jesus - she always points to Jesus. This past week we had great discussion about the Queen of Sheba’s visit to Solomon. Jesus brings up that visit in the book of Matthew....it’s fascinating how Nancy ties all the details together so neatly! Our group of 25 has loved this study and grown in our knowledge and faith. Highly recommend.

As someone who has purchased just about every Bible study guide out there, I have finally found one that I like. Nancy's questions aren't the typical regurgitate what you've just read type questions. Many of the questions actually force me to think on a deeper level and the application is great. My favorite part of her study guide are the teaching sections that are at the end of each book from the Bible. It's like reading the children's "Jesus Story Book Bible," except with more content. I love seeing Christ in the Old Testament; something the church failed to teach me as a child. The Old Testament was always disconnected from the New and it generally ended up a story about morality and God's wrath, rather than the grand narrative of Christ's redeeming work for sinners.I initially bought Nancy's book to use with my teenage daughter, but I am enjoying it myself. It is a wonderful tool for generating conversation and for those of us who desire to see Christ in all of scripture.

The amount of time you spend reading and studying this world will be richly rewarded in Faith, understanding, and knowledge.

This series of books have been a real joy....I just want to keep reading more and more.....I am going to preach a sermon on the overview of Judges...and this book has been very helpful in my preparation....It is a book that is so exciting....and it so exciting because it helps me to see Jesus in the Old Testament....Get this book...get the series they are really good
