There's a lot more than just roofs in here
This was recommended from somebody on Instagram. From the title I guess I just assumed this was about roofs and I was still looking for a framing book. This is definitely mostly about roofs and I never realized how complex they can be on some houses and it's really amazing that people can learn how to cut all the different angles for each board and do it fast efficiently and without Miss cutting. I can tell you if you need to frame any type of roof you can find the methodology for it in this book but unless you're going to be a professional roof framer for complicated roofs this is probably way too much information to try and learn everything in here. This is a really good reference book with tons of good information

For the extreme Do-It-yourselfer
I just completed the roof for my 1700 square foot addition. Except for help getting large beams overhead, I did it all on my own. Keep in mind, I didn’t know “jack” about rafters or building a roof before I started. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what a common rafter was. I have purchased every rafter book I can get my hands on, but Roof Cutters Secrets was key to my being able to stack this roof. It is an encyclopedia of roof building covering most of the scenarios you will run across. From broken hip overlays to flying valleys to diverging king hip-valley jacks. Secrets shows what to do with those rafters after you cut them. The other books show how to lay out and measure rafters, but they don’t explain how to build your roof. There is a huge difference. Compare measuring and cutting studs to framing a house, it’s sort of like that. My simple little roof had had both gable and hip details that overlay vaulted sections. There is a lot to “building” that “rafter layout” isn’t going to tell you. You get the point.Buy all the books you want, but make sure you have this one. It’s the only one you’ll need and it’s not just for professionals. And get Wills companion DVD. It helps to watch him actually cut and stack the details that might be hard to understand when you read it in the book. Definitely worth the money.I am glad I purchased Roof Cutters Secrets. You will be, too.

If you build custom homes, get this.
I was introduced to this book by the foreman I worked with. If you want to up your game and earn a good pay increase, this book is a gold mine of amazing information to framing intricate irregular roofs. I started off not knowing much and after reading through this book, I understood more of how to put a complex roof together and it was just fun speaking the same language as someone else. Maybe I'm a nerd but while the other framers were focusing on finding a date or having a few beers after work, I loved reading this for reference.

Use your intellect!
I’ve come to realize that there is really no such thing as being “skilled” at any sort of carpentry. It all comes down to what you know, how much you care and in time you'll get the hang of all the tools and tricks with them.I would like to see some more fundamentals taught at this high level, to give new guys a book they can quickly pick up on. The illustrations were extraordinarily helpful. This book is for sure staying in my console, it will be referenced a lot I already know. There are so many illustrations and quick tips that will make you the wisest carpenter you can possibly be, it’ll seperate you from the common Joe if you put it to practice.

Not very easy to follow...
Will has good production techniques but is not a high quality teacher. If you want to know how to be fast then Will knows how. If you want to be a high quality builder there are lots of better, much more easy to read books on the topic. This is not for beginners and Will says so.
