There is the chance of ricochet, certainly, but the bullet becomes misshapen upon striking the steel plate. It shouldn't travel very far, as the aerodynamics are destroyed upon impact. Still, the "safe" distance is determined by caliber and type of round fired. For me, and a handgun I stay at least 10 yards and more like 15 yards away from the target. For rifles, .223 and above, I'm at least 50 yards away. **Q: Looking at 1/4” plates for standard pistol calibers (9, 40, 45, 357sig, 38, 357mag, etc.). Will fmj be okay with 1/4” or do I need 3/8”?** A: Hello, 1/4" AR500 is fine even for most handguns and some smaller magnums like the 357 mag. FMJ is not a problem at all. No need to go to 3/8" unless 44 mag / 500 S&W / 454 Casul or similar. **Q: Can it take 30.06 round at 100 yards?** A: Any of our targets 3/8" thick or thicker can handle that round.
