Bill Murray Shines In Uneven Comedy...
STRIPES, which shares, with PRIVATE BENJAMIN, the distinction of being one of the two best service comedies of the 80's, was released during Bill Murray's halcyon career years (1979-1984), and has moments of absolute lunacy and imagination, faltering only during the last third of the film. A showcase for many rising stars (Harold Ramis, John Candy, John Larroquette, Sean Young, Judge Reinhold) and featuring Warren Oates' funniest performance on film, it nevertheless is primarily Murray's show, and he delivers, brilliantly! As an arrogant but likable loser who thrives on twisting the 'rules' to suit him, Murray combines physical humor, sly one-liners, and an anti-establishment point of view to establish himself as the logical successor to the anarchists of ANIMAL HOUSE. His character, John Winger, is not only a jerk, but charismatic enough to make being a smartass desirable! After losing his girl, his job, his home, and even his pizza ("Then depression set in," he announces), he sees a TV commercial for the Army, and convinces his friend Russell Ziskey (sweetly played by Harold Ramis), an English language teacher who's better at teaching cuss words to his students than English, to drop everything and enlist with him. Basic is a challenge for Winger, as the Army expects him to be a soldier! In a unit comprised of idiots, psychopaths, potheads, and an overweight recruit who enlisted to "shed a few pounds" in a 'Club Med'-style environment (John Candy, who is very funny), Winger immediately attempts to take charge, only to be put down by gruff drill instructor, Sgt. Hulka (Warren Oates), who is wise to all of Winger's scams. Not that this interferes with Winger and Ziskey's social life; the pair soon have MP girlfriends (P.J. Soles and Sean Young) sharing trysts in the General's quarters! The film's highlight occurs after Sgt. Hulka is incapacitated by an exploding grenade. Faced with having to start basic training all over again, Winger coaches the unit overnight in HIS kind of drill for the final Review and Parade. Unfortunately, everyone then oversleeps, and arrive at the Parade Ground in all manner of dress. Winger's unorthodox marching routines are a hit, however, and the General, thinking he is watching a crack outfit, addresses Winger in one of the funniest exchanges ever recorded on film! GENERAL: Where's your Sergeant? WINGER: Blowed up, Sir! UNIT: Blowed up, Sir! GENERAL: You mean you trained YOURSELVES? WINGER: That's the FACT, jack! UNIT: That's the FACT, jack! Unfortunately, STRIPES doesn't end with this brilliant piece of insanity, but moves to Europe, where the unit is assigned to guard an attack vehicle that looks suspiciously like an RV. While there are a few amusing moments in this final chapter of the film, it lacks the inspired madness of basic training, and drags, a bit, until the famous 'Magazine Cover' postscript. All in all, STRIPES is a memorable, if flawed near-classic, and paved the way for Murray and Ramis' blockbuster, GHOSTBUSTERS. If you're a Bill Murray or service comedy fan, it should DEFINITELY be in your collection!

A Top 10 All Time Comedy Masterpiece
One of the best comedy movies ever. A 10 ten all time movie if you grew up in the 70s & 80s anyway... LOL

Wonderful
What can I say? This is one of the great comedy films of all time and with the extra footage you get even more. Hollywood just does not make films like this anymore. I think because of the rightward political shift there is a lack of artistic freedom and experimentation in Hollywood today. Everything new seems to come from "Independent" films but does not originate with the big studios. Also, the authoritarian climate in America seems to have purged most films of a socially conscious message of any kind. Stripes, and even more so the extended version, at least gives a nod to some of the problems with the U.S. military. What would be radical criticism today was probably not even noticed when Stripes was released. I think that when you censor films to the degree they are today you lose something important. We are all part of the world we live in and when artists are not given the opportunity to address relevant social issues even in a comedic way the quality of the art suffers. I think we have seen this anti-liberty anti-liberal trend in all American media especially the music industry and the news. Hopefully it is time for a reversal and we can begin to see Bill Murray and others in films like this again. Stripes is simply one of the all time great comedies. I still continue to laugh like hell every time I see it. My one complaint would be that the film displays words at the bottom of the screen telling you when the added footage begins and ends. This is annoying and distracting. However, I did get used to it by the end and was able to ignore it. Perhaps this will be better in future viewings. I highly recommend this film. Bill Murray is the greatest!

Never ever thought I would see this movie on 4K A real classic film from the 80s Fully recommend as the movie is great a real classic 80s comedy & has both the theatrical cut & the extended cut in 4K. The transfer & sound of this movie is awesome in 4K & the steelbook houses the original artwork which is good to see. 5* all round & a great addition for any collection. As far as I am aware it’s only available in the steelbook format on 4K & Blu ray. A must for all steelbook & 80s movie collectors.

One of the funniest Bill Murray films, 18 extra minutes with 6 deleted cuts. Teaming up with Harold Ramis, both later to star in Ghostbuster films. Ivan Reitman film who also did Ghostbusters. Murray & Ramis decide to join the army, after Murray loses his girlfriend and shared apartment and car. Warren Oates is Sargeant Huckle who is their commander. hey are a group of misfits, John Candy is also part of the team. Great scene where they march to song, later Murray and the team perform before graduation in a great team display, as a result they are sent to Europe with a new armored car. The 2 team up with female MP's to take the car on a vacation jaunt. The group is taken prisoner by the Russians and Murray & Ramis and the 2 females go to their rescue. Great extras with interviews with the cast. Highly recommended.
