Nice scales for a classy looking working knife
Bought 6 pairs of these for folding knife kits. I was ambivalent due to the minimal info in the product description and the low price at the time ($6.75), but I was very pleased with what I got. Each pair of scales is book matched and has pencil marks on the sides to keep them matched up. The cuts are somewhat rough but the surfaces can easily be flattened with a belt sander, or even just by hand with a sanding block and 120 grit sandpaper. The grain figure is good for the price, not presentation or exhibition grade, but still attractive and appropriate for a knife that's intended to both look good and get used. The figure really comes out with some linseed oil. The attached pic showing all of them has one of each pair dry un-oiled (left) and with oil (right). In the other pic the oiled one is also sanded. Of the 6 pairs I ordered two looked really great (upper right), three were about average (bottom row), and one I think was a little sub-par (upper left).Overall I think it was a fair trade-off at the $7 price. For the new $11+ price I would expect more. There are sites selling presentation grade Curly Walnut scales for ~$13 each.UPDATE: about 1 year later, I finished the project I bought these for- six knife kits as groomsmen gifts. I am very happy with them! Pictured below. They came out a little better than expected just based on the appearance of the blank scale. Two of the 6 sets I received came out truly gorgeous looking (IMO!). I would also say that as an entry level knife maker, black walnut is a great choice. It is one of the softer hardwoods and is very forgiving when it comes to sanding- if you move up a grit too early, you still won't be sanding forever. i had no problems with the consistency, integrity or thickness of the wood.

Good for kitchen knife
I have a kitchen knife whose plastic handle started crumbling. I bought this wood and made a new handle for it. I've never tried a project like this before and so I'm sure there's lots of folks out there who could do better, but even with my amateur effort, it turned out pretty good! Be sure to wipe the wood down with mineral oil when you're done, it really makes it look nice.

Met my expectations
Amateur knife builder here, but very happy with the 5 sets of scales I have ordered. Square and true and clearly book matched. Pretty nice grain on all as well, though not "fancy". Seems like a good value based on my shopping.
