Can you use it for foods such as soup or chili?

Yes! It has 3 "modes" that allow for a variety of sealing. You can make a "bag" with the roll, buy pre-made bags, or use their amazing food-vac sealing containers. The containers have a "seal" button that serve the purpose much like a "pop" top on glass sealed containers bought from stores. I use mine to reseal cereal, bread, and cheese bags. Great product! Consider buying some food grade oxygen absorbers for long-term storage of dry goods, too!
