Epic and classic
A huge fan of this series of novels after first reading them back in the 1970s. After watching the recent films I decided to revisit them starting with Dune. There is so much more to the universe created by Herbert that just can’t be translated in to film. Easily one of the best Sci Fi novels I have read.

A TIMELESS CLASSIC
This is such an incredible and well written story. Don't compare it with the obvious others, this is simply a classic that has to be read.

What took me so long?!
That’s my reaction after reading Dune. I’ve heard about it since I could remember, avoided films because I didn’t think they’d be for me, and I was a fool for it. This novel seems to be the source of so many cultural references, and I can trace its impact on media throughout. It helps that the book is captivating. Don’t come here expecting hard science fiction. This is a space opera at its finest. It can be hard going in the first couple of chapters, but once you adjust the writing style and the third person omnipresent narration, it becomes a delight. The world building is fantastic, the world(s) feel fleshed out, and the use of religion and religious beliefs is rather interesting. If you’re on the edge about reading Dune, do it. The worst outcome is you’ll understand where some references have some from.

A sci-fi classic
A classic of science fiction, ‘Dune’ is a sweeping epic of time and space. The world-building is masterful and the plot interesting and exciting. The protagonist is young Paul Atreides, whose family is awarded the fiefdom of the desert planet Arrakis, colloquially known as Dune. This is the only known source of “the spice,” a substance necessary for space-travel, which also extends life. Since the spice is so valuable, ruling Arrakis is a dangerous endeavour, especially since the Atreides are taking over from their historical rivals, the Harkonnens. Added to the dangers from other noble houses are the dangers of the planet itself. All this, and many secrets being hidden by various groups, Paul must overcome.Paul is rather too mature for a fifteen-year-old, even given his remarkable abilities and the special training he’s received since birth, but this is somewhat necessary given the story. The author also occasionally misquotes himself (for example, the wording of the Litany Against Fear changes repeatedly), which bothered me a little, but this is a highly entertaining read.

Character Typo!
Nothing against the book itself, as it's pretty good - however this version does have a consistent typo in it.The character is supposed to be called Piter de Vries but this edition has it written as de Vried. Not a big problem, but worth being aware of when purchasing.

You can watch the films, but the book makes them complete.
Could not put the book down once I started it.

Awesome read...overpriced hardcover
First off, the read is amazing. I've read Dune a dozen times or so over the years. Definitely recommend you read it. However, this particular copy is crazy overpriced for the quality of the book. Mind you there is nothing wrong with the book...it's just not worth the ~$38 price tag. I'd happily pay that or even more for a better product (e.g. larger, cloth binding, and/or artwork, et cetera) but this particular printing is really better suited to the $20 price range. Overpriced based on the recent movie release I presume.
