Don't Follow Your Heart: God's Ways Are Not Your Ways

Can't Recommend Highly Enough
I can't recommend this book highly enough. Because there are 31 chapters, I planned to read a chapter a day for a month, but I was challenged continually and would often spend several days chewing on a chapter. The really excellent thing about the way Bloom writes is that he sounds so very...normal. He doesn't attempt to impress with big words or seminary-level theology, but the concepts are deep and still very well written. He seems to be a man of deep humility, great integrity, and honest experience of walking with and loving God through the normal life stuff we normal folks face. I loved, loved this book. Thank you, Mr. Bloom.

CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK ENOUGH
This book got me through the roughest time of my life. I read one chapter each day, and it helped me stay connected to God rather than turn and run from Him in my pain. I cannot recommend this book enough as Jon Bloom is the first person I've ever read that truly explains that our hearts were created for God and not for the things of the world.

Easy read, i usee it like a devotional.
The chapters were short enough to read as part of my morning personal devotion. I specifically liked the chapter on when God's will isn't clear (chapter 22). It helped me answer a number of questions I have had over the years and shed some extra light on one of my favorite verses, Romans 12:2. I will continue to read portions of it in my devotions as it adds extra insight in understanding the word of God.

Down to earth, scriptural, teaching in short easily-read chapters.
Our culture tells us to follow our heart, but Jon Bloom has shown so many scriptural reasons why we must follow biblical teaching and not trust our heart/emotions. We will make many mistakes in life if we follow just our own understanding. This is easily read and contains such good, basic, solid teaching for those who want to follow Jesus more closely as His disciples.

I was not disappointed. As a Christian I know my heart is ...
Jon Bloom is an artful word surgeon. I bought this book because God has used Jon's posts on the Desiring God blog/newsletter to show me things I need to see. I wanted more. I was not disappointed. As a Christian I know my heart is deceitful and exceedingly wicked, but it's loud and I listen to it more than I'd like to admit. This book has helped me recognize the loud voice that so easily leads me astray.

There is a pinch of negativity in this book
I learned a lot from this book. I consider myself a student of the Bible and I've read it daily for the last 17 years. That said, the author does know what he is talking about but, in my humble opinion, places too much emphasis on "sad" or contrarian verses. In short, there is a spirit of heaviness throughout the book. The reader should know that the Bible does indeed mentions that you should search within your heart for advice (Pr. 20:5). That those with a happy heart live in a continual feast (Pr. 15:15). And Jesus's burden is light and his yoke is easy (Matt. 11:30). Furthermore, He came to give us a rich and satisfying life (John 10:10).The author does command an abundant knowledge of the Bible but places too much focus on "ugly" verses. Perhaps this was deliberate. Anyway, it is not as inspirational as most are used to.

Brilliant, practical, Godly wisdom.
This is a great book! The content is Biblical and practical! So many messages that we all need to here! The heart is deceitful! The only thing I didn’t like is that the chapters were short, so this could be used almost as a daily devotional. I’d prefer regular-length chapters so I can read straight through.

Wow, you mean we shouldn't just do what feels good?
No, we shouldn't, though we hear it from our culture all the time. God's laws are there for our protection and cheap pleasures actually cost a lot. I was looking for a book on the Bible and emotions. This is a good one. We are supposed to discipline our hearts, not give in to our sinful desires. This author lets you know the how and why of doing battle with spiritual forces and mastering the flesh for our own good. I recommend.

A book like not many
This book is a must read. It is edifying, encouraging and it says so much in little space! It is from someone who has trully walked with God and I feel grateful God led me to this reading. Also English is not my first lenguage and I usually struggle to finish the books I start in this lenguage, but this one kept me marvelled till the end and I read it very fast. I even would like to read it again.

The answer when I feel I can't trust my heart.
I bought this book when I felt that my heart and my mind were in conflict. I wasn't sure if God have spoken through my heart or my mind. This book blessed me and guided me out of the cloud into clarity. God bless you Jon.

Thought provoking book
Loved this book! I couldn't put it down, and when I finished I read it again, but more slowly, to digest and think about it's content. A good reminder that we really need the Word to change our thinking as we live it out!
