Thrilling read
DCI Logan is a no nonsense policeman and I really like his character. He has a hard bacteria but cares for all the staff on his team although he doesn't show it. A gruesome death of a much loved teacher ends with a surprise killer. Great from start to finish. Into book 3!

Gripping thriller.
Well written , keeps you guessing till the end with enough dark humour to lighten the tone. Highly recommend. Just ordered the third in the series and already enjoying that too.

Second case but as good as the first
A second outing for DCI Logan sees him moving out of Glasgow to the highland city of Inverness. We meet some characters from the first book and many new in this tale containing satanic rituals performed on a body found in Loch Ness.To slip into Scots, a local numpty tells the press this involved Nessi and they, loving any outrageous story, picked it up with a vengeance. But the proper police work continues, and they move towards solving the case. Expect many blind alleys and false suspects before they discover the actual truth.Yet again, the author instils an amazing sense of foreboding. You just feel there is something menacing around every corner, behind every bush. Will it be another attack on the police, or perhaps a new victim. This is a gritty drama, so expect some swearing. Also, a little gore from the ritual slaying. Neither detracted from my enjoyment of the book.I received a review copy of the audiobook and enjoyed it despite having already read the eBookThe same narrator as book one, his Scottish accent only adds to the enjoyment, giving it some authentic ambience (although not one from Inverness).I can recommend both the eBook and the audiobook since the plot is excellent and the narration only enhances.

Gripping
I am new to JD Kirk - I find the mix of drama and humour brilliant. The characters are good so much so they feel like I know them. Highly recommend reading the DCI Logan books. They remind me of Stuart MacBride

Very good series - I'm enjoying getting to know Jack Logan
In the search for a series of crime novels that I'd not read, I came across the DCI Jack Logan books. I've now read the first one and loved it, so was keen to move onto the next one which is this novel. The first novel was set up very well as Jack travelled to an unfamiliar area, enabling his new colleagues to get to know him at the same time as new readers. The book is 336 pages and 47 chapters - the format is set as a fast paced, easy to read crime novel. The novels have a strong sense of their location and this is no exception. Immediately, the reader is told about the weather, the remoteness, the tourists, the locals and many other elements that create a definitely Scottish atmosphere.Jack has moved from the city so is meeting a few of the characters for the first time - great for the reader as we get to know then through him. The book is written in the third person but the narrative follows Jack most of the time, so we get to understand him and invest enough in him to want the murder to be solved. Both the narrative and the dialogue is written in a slight Scottish accent - its not over powering but enough to be noticed and I found myself saying a few of the phrases in my head to see how they sounded.Jack is a classic fictional detective - clever and intuitive, admired by his colleagues but with a personal life torn apart by his devotion to the job.The author swaps between locations from chapter to chapter, often ending with a cliff hanger that keeps the reader staying hooked and wanting more.Pleasingly, the ending is exciting but not ridiculous. Once we know the details of the murder the author then goes onto set up for the next novel, establishing Jack firmly in his new environment. This series is outstanding but it is very good and I'm enjoying getting to know Jack Logan
