Good STEM content, but Beware Grammarians!
In my lifetime, I've been a journalist and an English teacher. I'm nearly 60 years old, and I'm back in college now for a STEM Certificate through ETSU and a Master's in Instructional Design through WGU. I'd like to give a brief review of this book, which I have on loan from ETSU. "STEM ROAD MAP: A Framework for Integrated STEM Education" is full of great content and examples. Bravo to the editors for compiling this information because it could help further STEM education in our schools. With that said, let me explain why I do not own the book and don't plan to buy it even though it might have been useful in my career. The problem is that every time I hit a grammar mistake, I stop reading and stew and fuss. Yes, it's a personal problem, I know! Yet it is one that makes me stopping reading many, many books. I cannot get past a sentence with bad grammar. It switches my brain from comprehending the content to examining the error and wondering how it got there and why the editors didn't catch it. In this book, the greatest number of grammar mistakes I've noted is the misuse of semicolons (see the photos for a couple of examples). Other mistakes show up as well. For example, a thorough editor surely would have noticed that "disciple" was used where it should have stated "discipline." If grammatical errors don't bother you, then you'll surely get a lot out of this book. I'll definitely finish it because I have to for my course, but it will never be part of my own library.
