It tells the story of an immortal being, Destiel, and the man he loves, Sean, working together to fight an unspeakable evil creature that could destroy both of them. The creature invades Sean’s body, slowly killing him from the inside out, and Destiel is the only one who can save him. Through the struggle to survive, Sean and Destiel must choose whether to give in to their growing romantic attraction or to let each other go.This novel is what happens when an idea has excellent storytelling potential but Burlot falls short at the execution. There are two main components to the story - the tragic romance and the good vs evil science fiction story. In Burlot’s effort to blend the two story elements, the lack of literary experience can be painfully clear in many areas while potential for improvement shines through in other areas.The romantic inner narrative as told through Destiel’s voice ventures into cliched purple prose on more than one occasion. Romance frequently butts heads with much more dire, darker circumstances in which Sean and Destiel must fight for survival. It often leaves the reader unable to buy the characters as realistic when the darker overtones demand deeper attention than merely who falls in love with who. Destiel would have stuck better as a novel without the immortal being looking after Sean in such a life and death battle without his thoughts so frequently being interrupted by sexual arousal, fantasy, and romantic longing that made Destiel - who had the knowledge of the universe at his disposal - sound more like a pining teenage girl.Burlot’s Destiel would have also benefited from a thorough once-over by an editor. The mechanical and grammatical mistakes were not as numerous as many first-time self-published novels but they were numerous enough to distract the reader from the meat of the story. Cleaning up awkward dialogue would have made Destiel a much more enjoyable novel as well.Where Burlot shines in Destiel is her commentary on the homophobia LGBTQA couples face and the strength required to see them through it. Perhaps if Burlot hadn’t limited herself by the confines of existing worlds like Supernatural, her voice in this important and neglected area of literature would have taken the forefront. The novel might have been stronger as a literary effort focusing wholly on LGBTQA issues as opposed to combining it with the science fiction and fan fiction elements.If readers are looking for the popular Supernatural pairing known as Destiel (Dean and Castiel), not much of it will be found. There are traces of Dean in Sean’s speech patterns and traces of Castiel in Destiel’s speech patterns but little else will be recognized by those who consume Destiel fan media. Even changing the names back to Dean and Castiel leaves little recognizable to the trained Destiel eye.Overall, this novel will frustrate readers who aren’t on a traditional romance novel diet because Destiel’s voice diverts into romantic fluff and sexual tension at times that often jar the reader out of the science fiction plot. However, fans of purple prose romance novels will enjoy it. Burlot has a long way to go in her literary growth but the potential for her to become a much more skilled and worldly independent author is there. It will be interesting to see what she learns from this publishing experience and whether her technical, characterization, dialogue, and plotting skills improve in the future. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's AWESOME *by D***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 28, 2015* I have bought and read this book as you can see from my photo. It's the best fic I have ever read and I've read them all I think. It's better than Twist and Shout. Most people have heard of that and this leaves it behind. It's a full Destiel fanfic at its best. There is an alternate universe plot, very well done and brings you right into the story. There are thrills, devotion, LGBTQ rights issues and a fantastic storyline. If you like fluff you will love this too. Its more than just a premise to tell a story. The story makes this book what it is and sets it apart from the others. I'm following this author and I will buy all her books from now on. The writing is beautiful, the story is beautiful, and the Destiel concept is beautiful. What more could a fan ask for huh. Keep writing girl, don't let anyone stop you, especial not the Destiel haters. Some of us actually think you're a great writer and you deserve a good review for this book. Now you've got it. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME - AND ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!This book is lovely and fluffy and romantic and none of the things the reviewer on here has said.
