The 4000 has a fixed flame for HIGH. I mostly use the 8000 on high, but it is sometimes nice to be able to dial it back to a small, gentle flame. Iā€™d get the 8000 unless $20 extra matters. **Q: Any idea how long a burn you'd get with a single tank?** A: depends on what you are burning, I melt gold on maybe a quarter tank for say ten minutes, so basicly you have to know your metal and how to work it. other metals take less time because the intense heat is not required as gold melts at 1100 to 1200c. **Q: does this tourch have a 2 stage switch? meaning can you press down partially to let the gas flow and then all the way down to get the spark.** A: It does. And so you know, it's called a momentary switch. **Q: Can i melt metal with this? A bit overkill but this torch is awesome. Flame adjust knob works great too.. Lights almost every time I click. I'm able to get the charcoal lit in about 30 seconds with just charcoal, no additional starter needed, 10-15 min the coals are ready. Inverting the bottle does not affect the flame and stays strong the entire time (something my manual nozzle did not do). I'm sure it works great for soldering as it generates a much bigger flame than my manual torch head I was using before. I primarily use this for 4th of July to light fireworks. There is not a better tool for the job, bar none. I've used every kind of ligher, punks, and even road flares. It's a large powerful flame that instantly ignites when you pull the trigger, and instantly goes out when you release the trigger. You can adjust the flame from a decent size to quite powerful(for a blow torch). It is well constructed, heavy but not overly so, and withstand abuse very well. It's even been contaminated with a lot of sand at the beach several times and once you blow it out it is perfectly fine. I've only used this torch for about 13 months, but it still works as well as day one.Lots of power for soldering and brazing as well, but I'll be honest this is my fireworks torch.
