Great book for fans of Star Trek TOS! (6th in the Wagon Train to the Stars series)
I owned this book (and the rest of the series) years ago, but sadly they were destroyed in our older barn due to a post-hurricane flood event. I recently replaced it with the Kindle version. While I confess to missing the tactile enjoyment of reading an actual paper book, I love the convenience of having hundreds of books available electronically. This book is the last in this 6 book series, which continues the story of a group of settlers headed to establish a colony far away from Earth. Having established their colony on Belle Terre, the Starship Enterprise is wrapping up their duty in protecting the colony and turning it over to the relief crew, which arrives in the middle of an attack. Will Commander Keller be able to prevent the destruction of both the Enterprise and the colony? My purpose in reviewing this and other items is only to provide my honest opinion based on my experience with the item. Great series!
Enthralling storyline, well written with everything a Star Trek fan looks for. Humor, battle, a little romance, mysteries, and multiple problems. Of course, by the end of this book almost all those problems are solved, but enough questions remain that could lead to more books, if the authors are willing. I've no doubt the readers are!

2nd Officer to Captain - A Grow Up Fast Journey
2nd Officers are not suppose to defy regulations depose their Captain and build a ship from scrap but that is what Nick does. This story is a fitting end to the New Earth series. The book itself is slow but it does end the story arc well.

Challenger...the Best of the New Earths
I thought Thin Air was pretty good as far as this horrible series goes, but Star Trek, New Earth Book Six - Challenger - might actually be the best. We do get a little Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty, but the main action centers around Nick Keller and his mutiny aboard the doomed Peleliu. Now I didn't give a flying damn about the Peleiu and her crew until Keller brained his captain with a monkey wrench and took over command - then things just got downright fun! The book is an enjoyable, fast-paced read. A lot of the New Earth series plot lines that were left dangling in the other five books get cleaned up very nicely in this final chapter, and the Enterprise finally gets to leave this lucklorn colony. Some of the BEST parts of the book were: UHURA - Bad, nasty Billy Maidenform is BACK and Uhura kicks his butt, quite nicely. You go girl! SHUCORION - He was a nice addition in this book as his character and beliefs are fleshed out a bit. He had a GREAT line about leadership late in the book, "You must lead them, not herd them." There are a few ex-bosses I'd like to say that to. KIRK - I hate Kirk...always have. But his relationship with Keller in this book is interesting as he acts like an all-knowing mentor. Plus Kirk doesn't get "any" in this book. SPOCK - Author Diane Carey finally explains the relationship between Spock & McCoy; they are Yin & Yang, each needing one other to be whole. Nice touch! ZOA - A new alien, and this one has a BAAAAAADDDDD attitude that's too much fun.Anyway, if you've read all six books, you deserve a reward! Thin Air is your first reward and Challenger is your second.

Not so much.
Not the best Diane Carey book I've read. Too many clichés, too much jargon. Not enough substance. After reading through the first FIVE books of this series, I got to the middle of the middle of the story and didn't care about Belle Terre, The Enterprise or The Peleliu or what happened to any of them. I actually put the book down and wouldn't finish the last chapter of this TOO TOO long series.

Good Book.
Started a little slow but finished well.

Conclusion
This is the sixth and last of the series. However, this one would not stand alone as well as the others as it ties a lot of unfinished lose ends together. We learn more about the Olivium and its thefts and again meet the big black energy absorbing cloud moving through space. This was a well written book and had more good interaction between the Start Trek crew. A definite read for all Star Trek fans.

I am a huge fan of Star Trek. This book was very enjoyable & I enjoyed the fact that this took place when Kirk was an admiral but stepped down to the rank of captain in order to be the commander of this voyage. It was also good to have a scene where Spock missed Bones so much it affected his concentration.
