The can be installed underneath the fitted sheet or if you are using a mattress protector pad ... underneath the pad. For our bed ... installing the bumper under the mattress protector pad worked best. Our mattress protector pad had larger side elastic so it held the bumpers perfectly and also provided them with a second layer of protection. Once installed these bumpers are very functional and do their job well. We have two toddlers (2 & 3) and the bumpers safely cradle and protect them in the bed. Portability: Another benefit of bumpers we initially didn't consider but truly appreciate is their Portability! We have a cabin at the lake and take the bumpers with use when the grandkids come out to visit. If you're a travelling family staying in hotels these would work great while travelling although they don't squish down or compact as small as their original shipping box.
