Herby Balm in a HUGE Tub; Suitable for Most Since It Is A Wash Off
I know. I am stating the obvious. But when the tub of the Eve Lom Original Balm Cleanser arrived, I was surprised by the sheer size of it. You know how it is. You order something, not paying attention to the conversion of the ml to ounces. And it shows up either being teeny-tiny or huge. I can barely hold this container in one hand. This Eve Lom balm comes in a 15oz white plastic tub with a screw-on lid, and three prepackaged sheets of 100% muslin (cotton) clothes to cleanse with. The jar is full—none of this oversized container with an inconsistently scant amount of product inside. I will include images of the product and the short ingredient list. The first ingredient is paraffinum liquidum, which is highly refined cosmetic grade mineral oil, a petroleum product that does not provide any nutritive value to the skin. Honestly, I’m not thrilled about it, but this is a wash off product too. Everything else is an amalgamation of rich emollients with fatty acids and antioxidants, preservatives (which you do want as this would go pretty rancid, quickly otherwise), and anti-inflammatories found in the German Chamomile (matricria flower oil). There are other essential oils too. Limonene is a fragrance oil component of citrus peels and is usually added to skincare products for scent purposes. The cleansing balm has a strong herby scent.Thankfully, they do not include a wasteful little plastic spoon. Instead, I wash my hands, dry them, take the clean edge of my thumbnail and gather up about a nickel-sized amount of balm. It is yellowish and speckled and goes from a creamy solid to a melted oil quickly. I massage it between my hands and work it over my dry face. You don't want to double-cleanse using an oil cleanser on a wet face. Oil cleansers are designed to emulsify (turn milky and rinse away) once they contact water. So, focus on breaking down the SPF, makeup, and stuff on your face first. It can take 30 seconds to a minute. Then you rinse off the oil cleanser and move along to your second step (water-based face wash and the rest of your skincare). They give you instructions on how to go about using the balm and muslin in a very luxurious but slightly time-consuming manner. While I have tried their muslin-method, I find using my hands and washcloth is just as functional to get the same result.I use cleansing balms akin to this as part of my nightly double-cleanse. They are great for disrupting the stubborn layers of SPF, product-buildup, makeup, dead skin, excess sebum, and the like, making it easier for the second step cleanser to remove everything. And balms manage to do this without overdrying or stripping the skin.I have mature (over 40), fair, combination-to-dry, acne-prone, sensitive skin. I was discouraged from using oils for years because marketing had us believing it was terrible for combination or acne-prone skin. It is nourishing and beneficial. I wish I had incorporated oil cleansers and topicals sooner. Now, I double-cleanse every night. It is a gentle, easy way to cleanse.Even with nightly use, this expensive tube will last me a year. Making it not so expensive when you consider how much you'd pay for several smaller containers of similar cleansing balms. Most cleansing balms come in 2-4oz containers. Here I'm getting several times as much product in one very super-sized tub.Is it worth it? Well, yes and no. I found it to be pretty mediocre when it came to the overall formula and performance. I wear copious amounts of SPF (regular and tinted), pencil in my fair (natural redhead) brows, and coat on a bit of (not waterproof) mascara. That's it, most days. This Eve Lom Cleansing Balm took a little more effort to work, regardless of which method I used. I give it a 7 out of 10. It is not the best I've used, but it does get the job done and has a pleasant herby smell. And I like the creamy texture, but I’m not keen on the overall formula. It does not seem very lux to me. I would have hoped for a nicer blend of skin-suitable oils (like grapeseed, safflower, sunflower, etc.) over mineral oil (as the first ingredient). I think this is suitable enough for most, since this is a short-term wash off product. But for the money, I don’t think I’d get this one again. I would rather have something with a better quality blend of oils and less “essential” herby ingredients, since I have sensitive skin. I did tolerate the use of this balm fine, so far. I’d just rather use something without mineral oil as I am also congestion prone.

It is simply the best cleanser I have ever used. I will never use anything else again. I
This is the best cleanser ever . I used to have adult acne and I have used it every day for seven years and I have never had another breakout. I do not use the cloth it comes with . I apply it to my dry face and then wet my Clarisonic applicator and use that to clean my face. It's the best of the best.

Excellent product if you can afford it...
I received 15.2 ounces of this facial cleansing balm in a plastic tub. It also came with 3 muslin cloths. Following the instructions exactly as directed the first couple of times I used it, it was perfect as a first step (removing a full face of make-up) to my double cleanse process. After a couple of washes in a mesh bag, the muslin cloth started to fray. Then I used the balm as any other balm I've tried, by just massaging the balm over my face, using a regular washcloth to wipe it away & then rinsed and used another face wash for the 2nd step. I couldn't tell any difference between following the product's directions or doing it my way. Either way, it removed my make-up.It did get into my eyes & it took a little while for my eyes to clear but it didn't hurt my eyes or cause any bad reactions. There is a distinct scent, hard to describe it - not unpleasant, maybe medicinal?Did I like the product - yes, very much. However I find this facial cleansing balm no different than any other cleansing balm that I have used (which were significantly cheaper in price than this product). $225 for this size tub is way out of my price range. I feel lucky & appreciative that I got to try this. It has a lot of product & it only takes a small amount to cleanse your face (so I feel it will last a long time), but I can't recommend it because of the price. I just don't see anything specific about this product that makes it any better than others I have tried.

Luxurious and functional too
Using this Eve Lom cleansing balm is like a mini spa experience, every time you wash your face. Very luxurious. As a cleanser and a makeup remover, it does an excellent job. I usually double cleanse, starting with an oil cleanser. I found that this cleansing balm does a better job of removing stubborn makeup than most cleansing oils I've tried. And I like the extra creaminess of this balm over a cleansing oil, as I don't feel like I have to apply any pressure or I scrub my face in order to get everything off. Just massage gently.I found this to be especially true around my eyebrows, which I really appreciate. For reasons I'll never understand, my eyebrows are patchy, slow to grow and prone to falling out if I do anything more than touch them lightly. Because they're in rough shape, I definitely have to fill them in every morning. But that becomes a challenge at night, when it's time to wash the fillers off. This cleansing balm does an amazing job of breaking down those eyebrow products, even if all I do is lightly brush it over the top of my brows a few times and rinse. No scrubbing at all, and poof! All clean.I have 40-something combination skin. I'm pretty careful what I put on my face. This product doesn't cause me any irritation, and it seems to be doing a great job of eliminating any buildup. My skin is looking great, which makes me very happy. This tub of cleansing balm is ENORMOUS. Especially given the item's high price tag, I feel like this is important to point out. It's massive. I use maybe a nickle-sized amount each time I wash my face and after several weeks' worth of daily use, I've barely made a dent in it. This is probably close to a year's supply for me. In terms of value, that's relevant. Takes some of the sticker shot out of it. (Not all, but definitely some!)The muslin clothes that are included with this cleansing balm are a nice touch. While this step isn't necessary, it feels nice and contributes to the overall spa experience that can come with using this product. I have been following up my cleanse with some time spent with a facial steamer and these clothes feel phenomenal on my face right after steam.Overall, I'm really impressed with this cleansing balm. It plays nicely with my face, which is always my challenge. It serves a necessary function yet manages to make me feel pampered while doing it. I mean, really, what more could I ask for? Highly recommend.
