The Akai Professional EWI4000S is a giant leap in the evolution of wind instruments. The heart of the EWI4000S is its built-in sound module that lets musicians plug a wireless MIDI or audio set up into the base of the EWI, and move freely around the stage without being tethered by wires. At Akai Professional, we understand that artists want to concentrate on creating and performing music, not manipulating buttons, so we’ve made the breath, vibrato, glide time, and bend width controls easily accessible and totally adjustable. In addition, the included software lets both Windows and Mac users edit, customize, store and recall sounds with their computer. The EWI4000S delivers incredible versatility, ultimate mobility and remarkable creative expression that brings a musical revolution to your fingertips.Technical SpecsEWI4000SType: Wind-instrument type controller with sound moduleFingerings: EWI, saxophone, flute, oboe, EVI, and EVI reversedSensorsNote Keys: touch sensorsMouthpiece: air pressure level sensorLip: pressure level sensorBend Up/Down Plates: touch sensorsGlide Plate: touch sensorOctave Shift Rollers: touch sensorsProgram Key: touch sensorKeys: LEVEL, FX, SETUP, TRANSPOSE, OCT, HOLDSensor: Adjustment Breath Sense, Breath Adjustment, Bend Width, Bend Adjustment, Glide Time, Glide Adjustment, Vibrato AdjustmentTerminals(1) line out (1/4”)(1) headphone out (1/8” dual mono/stereo mini jack) (Recommended min. headphone impedance: 32Ω)(1) MIDI in (5-pin DIN)(1) MIDI out (5-pin DIN)(1) DC in (for optional AC adaptor MP-9II)Other: Removal cable clutchPower Requirement4 AA batteries (alkaline or rechargeable) (Approx. 8 hrs. continuous use by batteries except with headphones)9VDC/200mA AC-adaptor MP-9II (optional)Dimensions (length x width x depth): 26.4” x 2.4” x 2.7”Weight: 1.9 lbs (without batteries)SOUND MODULESound type: Analog modeling synthesizerVoices: 2 (only with Octave & Hold function)Control: Range 8 octavesSound Source: 2 Oscillators, 2 FiltersWaveforms: Saw Tooth, Triangle, Pulse Noise Generator, Formant filter Effect Reverb, Delay, ChorusSound Capacity: 100 (50 preset sounds x 2)Display: (2) 7-segment LEDsFunction: Transpose, Tune, Note Hold, Octave, Program Change, Key DelayOther: Sound Editor software for EWI4000s is available from our Web site akaipro.comBox ContentsEWI4000SNeck strap(4) AA batteriesCleaning clothMouthpiece coverOperator’s Manual

Review: My favorite expression instrument by far! - **Updates below This is a true professional synthesizer, much better and more expressive than a keyboard type controller. Since I prefer the real orchestra instrument sounds, I would have gone with the EWI5000 which has sampled sounds. However, the lead time was longer than I wanted to wait, and everyone was out of stock. That worries me that there might be a reliability reason for manufacturing delays. I am able to use software sampled orchestra instruments on my iPad mini 3, but the expression is limited compared to what should be on the EWI5000. If I did I again, and I knew there were not any reliability issues, I would wait a month for the EWI5000. Yet, I am thrilled with the EWI4000s; it is a great synthesizer. *Update: A year later, I would stick with the 4000s - I really love it! (But I would love to have both!) **Update: two years later, this EWI4000s is my favorite instrument out of the dozens I own. If I had to have limits on which instruments to own, I would choose keyboard 1st, then guitar 2nd because of versitility with groups; but as far as expression, nothing is as fun as this EWI! When you have money you've got to buy SWAM "The Saxophones" and then, later SWAM Cello. Even if you have the real accoustic instruments, these VSTs give you so much midi control with instantly usable full expression sample sounds that it's worth having. For live performance, use your Selmer, etc, but for recording, EWI+SWAM is much better!
Review: What not to expect from the EWI 4000s - Hi, all. This is an expensive instrument. Most of the demos I heard around the internet sounded great. . . The EWU4000s ships with a terrible bank of sounds, however. There are no specific instruments: no trumpets, no trombones, no clarinets, saxes, guitars. . .just weird synthesized sounds. So, if you want to play the instrument and have good sounds, you'll have invest another [...] for a banks of sounds. The only place that sells EWI4000 sound presets is [...]. Tech support: Akaipro tech support is pretty bad. Waits range from 3-20 minutes. I called to ask what their recommendation is about the sounds. The guy there said, "Uh, hang on, let me see." He came back ande said we don't sell presets. I asked him if he has a recommended source for sounds. Again he said, "Uh, just a minute." He eventually came back with the [...] site. As far as help at the Akaipro website, forget it. There are no instructions, no help, nothing. The manual is pretty bad, too. My EWI came with a Japanese language manual, but it did have an English manual in PDF format. Bottom line? EWI4000s is well made, and I'm sure it will sound good once I get some decent sounds in it. Buy one and you're on your own. PS Power Adapters won't be available until February, Akai says.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I am a clarinet player and want to practice outside of sound-dampened music rooms. Can this hook up to a pair of headphones so I can play in my house?**
A: AKAI support here! A headphone port is on the 4000S. If you have any other questions, please feel free to call or email us by using the contact information on akaipro.com/support.

**Q: Can the instrument put out sound on its own, or does it need to be connected to an output device such as external speakers?**
A: unfortunately, EWI doesn't have a built-in speakers and has to be connected either to a headset or an external speaker or thru an amplifier.

**Q: How appropriate is this for a beginner clarinet player?**
A: Well, I was a saxophone player for many years before I bought this instrument... So it came pretty easy to play because I had a good solid grounding in playing a wind instrument that translated easily onto the EWI. Playing an EWI early, especialy as a beginner clarinet player, it may divide your focus and energies that will slow your progress as reed player... Which in turn, may also affect your EWI playing. Think of the EWI as its own instrument... It has its own skill set that needs develoing. There are many nuances to playing different woodwind instruments and if you are just starting out, it may serve you better in the long term as a musician to concentrate on the fundamentals of playing an acoustic woodwind instrument and developing your musicianship. Don't get me wrong, it's your choice... The EWI is loads of fun to play, just don't get caught up thinking that the equipment you use will make you a better musician, that comes with hard work and time. Hope this helps... But its just my opinion.

**Q: Is this a good product for someone who has difficulty maintaining breath?**
A: Yes. I have had a collapsed lung and I breathing issues . And it has helped me to strengthen my lungs .It is fully adjustable .Keep in mind though that you really have to spend time making adjustments to the unit , I Adjusted the breath sensor but I also had to scoot the thumb rest sensor back . This unit is the better instrument because it is 5 pin din midi and has built in sounds. I can midi it to my Yamaha 88 key piano too. There are lots of YouTube vids on setting it up . I can record my notes in sheet music format as I play it. I use midi studio 4 . This unit rocks , don’t go for the USB version . I do a lot with midi and I generally use the 5 pin din midi . Not usb. I can say that once you get it adjusted , it is a great horn. I play sax, I have an alto but want a c melody. I can tune and set this up like that sax and midi it through a sound bank or my yamaha and get a really close breathy tenor or cmelody sax sound .

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's great!
*by L***S on January 18, 2014*

It's a fantastic instrument that will greatly extend your musical palette. As a horn player in a band, you will be able to fill in some parts that would normally be required by the keyboardist. If you have the appropriate patch, you can make the EWI sound like almost anything. There is a bit of an adjustment period for using the octave key (slider?) but it doesn't take too long to get it sorted. Your technique needs to be clean and accurate or this will highlight any flaws in sloppy technique. It will allow you to be a more versatile musician and able to contribute more in a band/ensemble setting.
