Book arrived quickly and was in excellent condition
The book I ordered arrived faster than expected, and was in excellent condition. And the seller included a hand-written note. Who does that these days?

Excellent Resource Book
Excellent book however it seems the middle third of the book is dedicated to proving that the dates on some ancient wall panels corresponds to the travels of a physician. I would have summed it up in a paragraph.Other than the above I recommend this book highly. I've been in healthcare for over 40 years and this is the first book I've read that details the beginnings of modern day medicine in an interesting and enjoyable format.

very difficult on Kindle!
Caveat emptor, or whatever the Greek for that might be. This is hell to navigate on Kindle. Most important, the maps are tiny and so faint that they're useless. I should have sprung for the physical book instead.

slow read of an ecyclopedic and magisterial work, but wonderful writing style
In ordewr to absorb the densely packed information I read this book slowly, knowledge of the classics helps, but the writing style is brilliant

Big Disappointment!
This book is definitely not about the invention of medicine. It tells you nothing about the doctors or their notes. It is a history of Greece. It is not about the invention of medicine.

Definitely a niche book, for a VERY small number of people
Unless you're really into "who begat whom" sort of stuff, and have an interest in dating archons in a small Greek city, and maybe, just maybe, some information on a person who may have been, but most likely wasn't the famous Hippocrates we all know and love, don't bother.

What the ancient Greeks did for us
As always, Professor Lane Fox has written a collarless and intensely researched book which is also concise (300 pages) and very readable. His own opinions as to the dates, substance and importance of the evidence are always well argued and convincing but given no higher prominence than the well-chronicled views of others. This modesty from someone who has earned the right to be immodest makes the book a pleasure to read, even for those who are not classicists or medics, just curious about the origins of medicine.

Magisterial
A work of great scholarship but also written in an accessible style.
