Perfect For Grilling Purests
I purchased this grill last month to replace a cheap $50 grill I had purchased the previous summer. I really wanted a grill with cast iron grates and based on the price and user reviews, this one looked like the obvious choice.Delivery took a couple of weeks due to it being sent ground freight, but it was worth the wait. The second I tried to lift the box I knew I had picked a winner. Stuffed inside the deceptively small box was a huge steel behemoth. Assembly was mostly smooth. One tip, make sure the hooks on the bottom shelf are fully inserted into the legs before tightening any bolts. The four separate iron grill grates provided an ample cooking surface and the over-all construction felt solid and of good quality. The warming rack and side wooden shelves were also welcome features.Despite being anxious to break in my new toy, I made sure I took the time to cure the grill and season the grates (explained in the well written manual). It took a few hours, but was worth the effort. I grilled up a New York Strip Steak for my first go-round and it was the best I'd ever made. Those heavy grates gave me a beautiful char and cooked it to perfection!I did have one problem in that one of the grates had broken in two during shipping. I called up Char-Griller and after a quick conversation with their friendly service rep a replacement was on its way at no charge. All in all, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would recommend the 2121 to anyone interested in some really great grilled food.

Return Customer
I got this grill July 1999. I never used charcoal; always hardwood such as apple, oak, locust, and cherry. I only use newspaper to start kindling. I have a photo of this grill @ 1,000 degrees December 26, 1999! It was so full of hardwood embers from 5 foot high kindling flames that it melted all the snow in a 10' diameter. I grill out year round at least every other week. By spring 2000, I had lost 75% of the paint, which never bothered me. The cast iron grates are the key. I stack them up and wrap them safely in an old beach towel and keep them in the garage. The grill stays outside. The wooden shelf slats closest to the belly scorched and smoldered away by the end of 2001, but I bolted 1x12 planks both on the front and left sides. I also sanded the whole exterior, and repainted it with high heat engine block paint to make it more attractive for a party. The built-in thermometer gauge spring expanded all the way out and stuck, and the glass cracked but stayed intact. The top warmer shelf warped beyond all repair in 2002, and I threw it away. In 2003, The bottom ash pan had turned to paper, and I threw it away. I just started scooping out the ashes by hand. The bottom steel never gave out. I have seen the whole bottom belly glow bright red. September 2004, the Ohio River flooded New Cumberland, WV and took my grill away from me! All of 2005, I used my treasured cast iron grates (safe in the garage) atop a make-shift cinderblock grill with a large wok for a lid. The heavy cast iron grates are still like brand new.Great news!!! I just bought a new char-griller! I can't believe that my last one took the severe abuse that it did for so many years. Sometimes, I built huge fires in it just for heat. I live within city limits where only cooking fires are permitted, so you can only imagine this grill surviving a bon fire on top of it. I have many photos of my old one in it's glory.

A great grill and a great deal!
First, the bad news: this grill is an absolute bear to put together. A big part of the problem is that the instructions are actually incorrect in several places. For example, the instructions say to attach the support braces for the front shelf to the legs. (If you look at the picture here, the braces are connected to the legs.) However, on my grill, there were no holes in the legs, and the braces are shaped such that they would logically attach to the body. Sure enough, there are holes in the body that line up with the braces perfectly, so I just attached them there. There are several other instances like this that make an already time-consuming assembly even more difficult - it seems like there have been some changes made to the build of this grill that are not reflected in the manual. There are even some extra bits of paper here and there in the box that do contain manual corrections, but not all of the needed corrections are covered, and it all feels pretty haphazard. But once you've got it put together, what a great grill! The first time you even lift the box, you'll know this is a quality grill - it's HEAVY. All of the components are heavy-duty steel or solid wood, with the exception of the cast-iron grates and chromed steel warming rack. The cast-iron grates are actually why I chose this grill vs. an even more expensive Weber or other model - most of them use light-duty steel grates that I know from experience wear out quickly, are no good for flavor and are not non-stick. I've only just started using this grill, but the grates really do have a lot of mass and seem like they'd be very durable - and just generally, cast-iron cooks more evenly and holds heat better than steel, while enhancing flavor a bit. This grill may not have all the bells and whistles off a more expensive grill, but it's great for the grilling purist. It has a large cooking surface, it's very simple and intuitive to use and maintain once it's set up, and all of its parts are designed for two purposes and two purposes only: to cook food as tasty as can be, and to last for years. I didn't get the side firebox with mine, but I like know that I can add it later if I ever want to do some slow barbecuing. That's an option most grills just don't have.I do recommend getting a cover along with it (the manufacturer makes a fitted cover that's really inexpensive) because the body is made of painted steel and if any of that paint flakes off or any water gets onto the unpainted interior, you're talking rust.

Auténtica barbacoa
Todas las ventajas e inconvenientes de una barbacoa de acero americana, requiere algún cuidado para que no oxide pero la carne queda riquísima combinando la cocción en parrilla con el efecto horno.
