Value checks for oil paints
This is an awesome item. I use this as a guide because I have recently started using oil paints. I kept it in its sleeve to dab paint on for value checks and then I wipe it off.

Basic Value Chart for Artists
For the price I think it's worth the gamble - yes, mine arrived bent in three places as other reviewers noted in their experience as well. However, for watercolor painting professional artists always refer to the importance of value in effective/successful paintings. So I can live with the bent cardboard since it didn't affect the integrity of the 10% value range that I can gauge glazes in watercolor. Some frustrated reviewers suggested making your own, I did, but just not the same. Also the suggestion of paint chips for watercolor value scale is not useful. If having bent cardboard for $5 is annoying to you, then don't get it. But if you need a good value scale guide as I did, then this will work well for you. I know professional artists that get theirs from this company with no problems.

Value finder for painting, not a proper gray scale for scanning
The package says "Gray Scale & Value Finder". This common tool is a VALUE FINDER for painting or other art projects or situations where you have to determine the gray values of colors or shading. In other words, a visual helper. These are usually numbered one to ten, as this one is, and are printed as halftones. (You can see a halftone screen in the gray sections under a paragon loupe.) Perfect for painters and illustrators, good price, sturdy enough for its purpose, and even has a protective sleeve. Very happy customer here. However, someone mentioned that it should be eleven divisions, and that refers to a GRAY SCALE for scanning. Proper gray scales are continuous tone (CT) like on a developed photograph, and are divided into 11 steps for 10%, 20%, 30% grays, etc., up to 100% for black, PLUS white. There are also 21 step versions that include 5% increments plus one for white. Gray scales are scanned with artwork to help with tonal and color corrections. Printed gray scales (halftone) are available, often as book companions, but are not appropriate for digital image correction, and should only be used in a pinch and only with the proper eyedropper adjustments. I hope this clears up any confusion for prospective buyers.

Easy to Use, But Just Uncoated Card Stock...Would Not Recommend This.
This is a handy value finder, but it is made of uncoated card stock, easy to bend and damage. It came with a bent corner. This is probably too fragile for plein air work. I paid $3.97 (including tax) for this....the price just jumped to over $5.00. My advice is to purchase a gray scale and value finder that is included with other artist tools like a color wheel, etc. Many are out there that have a plastic coating to make them more durable...that is what I thought I was getting. I would not recommend this to others.
