All kinds of advice out there, doesn't need to be complicated or scary; we've been in too many labs to get very excited, except for the outstanding quality of the result, best all around lube we've ever encountered. We use a magnetic stirrer (~$27 Amazon) 600 ml standard Pyrex 1003 beaker (~$16 Amazon) and the REAL J-Lube (~$26 Amazon) (the REAL may actually be an issue, but it's all so cheap it seems a stretch). Put about 400 ml of the hottest tap water (maybe 120 -125 F) in the beaker with the largest mag stir rod , turn it on all the way to make a nice vortex, then add about a teaspoon of J-Lube powder slowly by sprinkling it onto the sides of the vortex. Let it dissolve and clear the solution, then do it again and again, until the solution starts to remain cloudy even after a fair amount of time, say, 1/2 hr. We quit there, but feel free to go beyond. Regardless, the time has come for time, probably several hours depending on how carefully the powder has been added (in other words, avoid lumps). When the cooking is done, decant into clean squeeze bottles; 400 ml or a bit more of mixed powder will nicely fit into 2 - 8 oz bottles with screw dispensing tops that seal and make application a breeze (resist the temptation to go much higher than 400 ml, the vortex will need the extra space when you start it up). The result is exquisite, an almost clear lube that often works wonders with only a few drops, is easy to clean up, will reactivate with a few drops of water all night long, isn't sticky, wet or dry, even tastes OK if you happen to get too close, intentionally or not (as far as we can tell, there's nothing to worry too much about in this stuff). We don't find any need for cold storage, just seal the bottle after use, try to keep the business end free of contamination, and watch for any signs that something might be growing, easy to see through a typical plastic squirt bottle. Clean well or discard any contaminated containers, and start over. Economical is the right word for it, even considering the cost of the hardware, which is pretty nice to have around anyway. We've made much thicker mixes, still costs next to nothing to make, just runs all day and overnight to fully dissolve without problems, unless your cats discover the neat new toy, so make sure the running mixer is left in a safe place. --T

This is the only way to go for people who are really serious about sexual lubricant. It's a bit of a pain to mix, but it's the best water-based lubricant out there, bar none. The best part is that you can mix it to be as thick or runny as you want by altering the amount of powder you use. The main downside is that it is somewhat perishable, so if you make too much for a session you need to store it in the fridge for next time. Tip: For best mixing use very hot water and thoroughly mix with a hand blender. 1tbsp of powder for 200ml of water makes a good consistency similar to other store-bought lubes. Use more powder from there for a thicker result. Wait until it has cooled down before use!
