Clan of the Cave Bear

A really great and enthralling story that makes you daydream about living through an experience like this for days - weeks - after you've watched it. Daryl Hannah, the rest of the cast and director Michael Chapman did an Out-frickin'-standing job portraying what it might have been like 60,000 years ago when Cro-Magnon/Early European Modern Humans (EEMH) crossed paths with - and even mated with - Neaderthals in Ice Age Europe. Daryl Hannah really is a great actress - and unbelievably beautiful. And yes, the genes for blonde hair were present in EEMH (I was skeptical so I checked to be sure :). I was impressed that the movie remained true to the overall story, and that it matched the quality of the books that I remember reading waaaaay back when I was a just a weee fetus (jk, I was a teenager). I saw this 1986 (!) movie for the first time just this year (2022) and was surprised to see the movie held up so well. And I was surprised that the movie cost $18million to make but only made $2million at the box office.

Lived the book but I dont remember ordering it ever.

It is a fairly good movie. I had seen it way back when it first came out, and wanted to see it again. The books are far better, of course, aren't most? But the movie was worth the price.

I LOVE this movie! The premise behind the book and the movie asks: What would a clan of Neanderthals do if they found a Cro-Magnon infant who has been left behind by her group and injured. Given that what we know about the Neanderthals since "Clan of the Cave Bear" was filmed, I think the answer might be similar to the story in the film. I am a feminist and have been told, "No, only men may...(fill-in-the-blanks here) countless times in my 65+ years thus far. Ayla doesn't let anyone get her down. She wants to learn to use a slingshot, no matter what the consequences. I was cheering for her when she finally hits the dead tree and I felt just as happy at her achievement as she did. One thing was controversial at the time--Ayla's giving birth to a Neanderthal-Homo sapiens hybrid child. Few if any, people thought that to be possible back in 1980. Now, however, we know that it is entirely possible since every one in Europe and Asia carries a small bit of Neanderthal DNA within them. Only sub-Saharan Africans have no Neanderthal DNA. "Clan of the Cave Bear" was filmed in the Okanagan in Canada. I have visited there a few times and it is some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen. This is a great movie to watch with popcorn an fizzy drink of your choice.

12/05/2013 12:54am The Clan of Cave Bear (Spoiler) This movie was a surprise in many ways, I had heard/read negative things about the film. I had read the original novel and I wanted to see this film. When I opened the DVD box they had that rare Scene Selection brochure with multiple chapters, each one listed I was familiar with from the original book. I had expected a total destruction of the novel based on rumors and crap. Darryl Hannah, plays Ayla, and she does a marvelous job, the central character in the book and the movie. Her family has been killed in an earthquake and she has to fend for herself. At the same time a group of Neanderthals have left their destroyed home, a cave, they seem walk for miles in cold and warm weather. The leader of the Clan, Brun find Ayla lying along a path, she's injured, the leader Brun, refuses to help the child, Iza the medicine woman and sister to Brun, wants to help the child. Brun objects, but he allows Iza to take the child. The Clan avoid The Others, a new tribal group moving into the land, and they take over more and more land. Most movies that I purchase don't put that Scene Selection chart in the DVD box, I don't know why, it is so helpful to look up a particular scene, even on the DVD the Chapters are skimpy, limited. The major change for the leader is Brun's acceptance of Ayla, came when she found their new home, an old cave but a new home. Iza, is pregnant, her mate was killed in the quake, he was a brute, violent, he is not missed, Iza has superior memory and talents handed down by her mother and her mother. Iza knows medicine, she uses Plants to cure ailments and aid in relieving pain, she knows what they are for in terms of healing simple wounds, cooking, drinking teas, she teaches Ayla her ways and Ayla takes it far beyond what Iza would or could have done.

It's sort of difficult to judge TOO harshly- seeing as the people communicate a nearly-silent language, there is a lot to cover, and this movie was done over 30 years ago- but I believe the creators could and should have done better justice to the book and the author. Maybe that's just the deal when you make a movie labelled after the book, but when you call your movie the same as the book, readers who become viewers typically expect there to be more unity in events. Many scenes are out of order, or completely different circumstances from the book, or just plain invented, changing not only the story, but the flow of the tale. Some of the most poignant scenes of the book were glossed-over in the movie, barely giving you an idea of what's going on. They almost completely leave out WHY Broud is so spiteful and obsessed with Ayla, for one, which is pretty much the entire POINT of the story, aside from there being two species of Man at the time. (She upstaged him and his ego every time he accomplished something, but you never get that impression.) Two of the main impressions you OUGHT to come away with is the rigid and ancient culture she was surrounded in, and their ability to craft high-quality, simple items. Instead, the movie appears to be very casual about the rules governing their life, (except about women touching weapons,) there's very little evidence of honing any skills, aside from Ayla's sling, and the items crafted are NOT of the quality that are described in the book, but rather of the stereotypical, crude, and unimaginative variety of cave-man idea. A good portion of the story is about Ayla learning the healing arts from Iza- however it's treated almost as a side-note in the movie, as if it were not of any real importance to the story. Not being a "speaking" movie, more narrative would have perhaps helped the flow, although I understand if they might have wanted to intrude as little as possible on the viewer's experience. They DO convey the deep emotional bonds between Ayla, Iza, and Creb, although Uba's character is almost an afterthought, and Broud is a sideline until the very end with no character development overall. But then they COMPLETELY trashed the ending with their own... and the bit about the ceremony at the Gathering was SO not-like-the-book.... Overall it was "Okay" but I'd love to see a newer version pop up some day, perhaps with a little more in-depth story-making and fewer liberties with the storyline. Also, can't help it, but I bet some modern CGI would help the viewers visualize the real differences that made the Cro-Magnon and the Neanderthal so very different to each other... the Neanderthals ARE called Flatheads by the newer species for very good reason, in the rest of the books. I know, I know- they did the best they could with makeup artistry in the mid-80's and it's difficult to simulate having less of a forehead and a flat-top skull. But still. It's nostalgic, mostly, so I watch it now and again. But then I get irritated because they futzed too much with one of my favorite stories EVER. Perhaps they ought to have considered making two movies of this, instead of one, so they could have told a more complete tale and done justice to Jean Auel's stories... After watching this, I think I'll just go re-read the books.... again. ;)

Read the book and had watched the movie years ago. Before buying the dvd I looked to see if any of my premium TV channels had it for free or if the library group had it. No luck with the library group and the cost to rent it sent me to Amazon to buy it.

About a girl separated from her Cro-Magon people by a earthquake that killed her mother. She is found by a less-developed, male-dominated Neanderthal clan. And her troubles escalate from there. Very good movie with Daryl Hannah.

Ich würde dieser Film-DVD noch einmal einen Golden Award verleihen! Schon von dem ersten gleichnamigen Buch von Jean M. Auel war ich grenzenlos begeistert, ebenso von den weiteren Folgebänden. Aber wie das erste Buch in diesem Machwerk verfilmt wurde, das war dann noch einmal ein krönender Höhepunkt. Auch war ich angenehm überrascht, und hätte nicht gedacht, daß sich das Buch so gut verfilmen ließ. Es geht um eine sehr frühe Zeit auf der Erde, als noch die Homo....nochwas-Menschen lebten, die ersten, im Aussehen noch ein wenig den Affen ähnelnden Steinzeit-Menschen, im Buch auch als "Flachschädel" bezeichnet, das Buch und der Film spielen zu einer Zeit, wo die "neuen" Menschen, der Chro-Magnon, die Bühne der Welt betraten, und ihre Vorgänger von der Evolution aussortiert wurden. Um die kurze Zeitspanne, in der beide Menschenarten zugleich auf der Erde weilten. Der Chro-Magnon war ja dann schon wesentlich weiterentwickelt, und sah auch dem heutigen Menschen schon sehr viel ähnlicher, als die Flachschädel. Und es geht um ein Kind, ein Mädchen, das verletzt und verwaist von einer Frau der Flachschädel gerettet, aufgenommen und aufgezogen wurde. Man muß sich vorstellen, daß ein Kind aus Düsseldorf oder auch aus NewYork von irgendwelchen Eingeborenen, von Aborigines oder Indianern oder sonstigen alten Völkern und Stämmen aufgenommen würde. Klar, daß das Schwierigkeiten geben wird, und daß das Leben dieses Kindes sich schwierig gestalten wird. Dieses Kind, Ayla, wunderbar gespielt von Daryl Hannah, hat also einen schon viel weiterentwickelten Geist, muß sich aber in dieser Gruppe von Menschen zurechtfinden, die noch nicht so weit entwickelt sind. Und in dem Film meistert sie das ganz vortrefflich, bis sie eines Tages, längst erwachsen und Mutter, doch erkennt, wie anders sie ist, und daß es besser für sie ist, diese Menschen zu verlassen und nach ihrem eigenen Volk zu suchen. Eine äußerst anrührende Lebensgeschichte, ein ganz besonderes Schicksal. Ein absoluter Lieblings-Film, so ein Lebens-Film, den man sich auch 30 mal anschaut, im Laufe der Jahre. Ein echter filmischer Leckerbissen. Etwas absolut ungewöhnliches. Eine kleine Kostbarkeit. Insbesondere wohl auch durch Daryl Hannah, die die Rolle der Ayla einfach perfekt rüberbringt und wiedergibt. Ich finde auch, daß es ihre überhaupt beste filmische Glanzleistung ist. Allerdings würde ich jedem, der sich den Film anschauen möchte,empfehlen, zuvor das Buch zu lesen. Dann ist der Film eine hinreißende Ergänzung. Für Leute, die das Buch vorher nicht gelesen haben, könnte der Film etwas unverständlich sein, und als ziemlich wortkarg, textarm oder dialogarm empfunden werden. Das liegt in der Natur der Sache - die ersten Menschen verständigten sich hauptsächlich durch Zeichensprache und Gesten, mit wenigen Lautworten, sie waren nicht der Sprache so mächtig wie die späteren Menschen. Im Buch von M. Auel wurde natürlich vieles beschrieben zur Erklärung, der Film aber konzentriert sich ja auf die Handlung, und muß daher eben auch ohne die Sprache auskommen, um authentisch zu sein. Das wiederum macht diesen Film aber auch so einzigartig. Schade nur, daß nicht auch der zweite Band von M. Auels Bücherreihe, Ayla und das Tal der Pferde, verfilmt wurde. Darin findet Ayla nämlich endlich einen Mann aus ihrem eigenen Volk, Jondolar, und das wird eine hinreißend große Liebe, und zuvor erzählt das Buch, wie die junge Frau ganz alleine in einem Tal haust, begleitet nur von einem Fohlen und einem jungen Löwen, die sie aufzieht und zähmt. Was im Film leider nicht so ganz rüberkommt, im Buch jedoch ausführlich, ist eine wahnsinnige Fülle von Informationen darüber, wie die frühen Menschen lebten, wo ganz im Einzelnen beschrieben wird, wie ihr tägliches Leben aussieht, wie sie ihre Werkzeuge erfinden, ihre Kleidung herstellen, und so weiter. Äußerst informativ also im Buch für Alle, die sich für das frühe Menschenleben interessieren, im Film kommt das aber leider zu kurz. Ayla ist eine ganz besondere Frau, so ziemlich der erste Mensch, der überhaupt auf die Idee kommt, Tiere zu zähmen, und wie Haustiere zur Gesellschaft zu halten. Dieses ganze Genre, um das es in M. Auels Bücherreihe um Ayla geht, und auch in diesem Film, ist so überaus interessant, weil wir kaum Geschichten aus der Frühzeit der Erde kennen, wir kennen zwar aus Schule und Wissenschaft die Geschichte, aber eben keine persönlichen Geschichten. Darum ist dieser Film so einzigartig und so berührend und interessant.Um Mord und Totschlag gehts heutzutage in fast jedem Film, Krimis und Action, aber aus der Frühzeit der Erde sind Geschichten eben eine Seltenheit, und darum ist dieser Film etwas ganz Besonderes.

Contrairement à ce qu en disent certains , il est sortis en salle en France car j ai été le voir , mais je ne me souviens plus la date , mais je peu affirmer qu'il était en salle à Montpellier, il avait d'ailleurs les sous titres . Il m avait marqué, déja par la musique pour l époque qui impressionnait et les décors grandioses . Je n'ai pas lu le roman , mais il aurait du avoir plus de promotion . Dommage qu'il ne sortira jamais en Blu-ray . Ce dvd n'a pas les sous titres mais il est assez simple à comprendre car entre les signes et la simplicité du langage on arrive à se faire sois même son idée. J avoue du fait que j e l ai vu à l époque mes souvenirs sont revenus très vite . Un exemple quand le grand Mog eur comprend que notre Eyla sait compter jusqu'à 20, il lui demande surtout de ne pas montrer son intelligence supérieur aux autres du clan , un passage fabuleux ..........la découverte des Math .... Je recommande ce film .
