Sams Creek Forest Products Winfield Mantel Shelf 60in W x 7-3/4in D x 4-3/8in H Red Oak

Unlike many giving this 1 star, I received both oak shelfs in perfect condition although I could see where another layer of cardboard in the packaging would prevent a lot of ill will even if they added $5 to the cost to cover additional packaging. It would help to put bubble wrap around the included 2 X 2. Again, both shelves were in perfect condition. It takes a minimal amount of sanding to knock off the few splinters, especially in the dental area. I am using these shelves in my TV room on the wall, one above the other and it looks and fits great. As far as I'm concerned the shelf is well worth the price and has stained up beautifully. It is strong although I added a few more brads to strengthen it further which I always do. It appeared to me that some of the 1 stars don't understand that poplar doesn't stain up well (but can be painted) but the oak ones are beautiful. It was a great purchase.

I live in coastal Florida and the builder skimped and never installed a mantel. Severely missed each year at Christmas, as there's no place to hang my stocking for Santa, or some festive garland. The 5 ft. Mantel was super easy to install and I'm a 65 yo female DIY'er. I gave it a light sanding with a sanding block prior to painting. I used a small artist paint brush to paint the intricate dentil moulding, but you could also spray it. Tools I used: measuring tape, stud finder, level and power drill to install the wood mounting bracket. I wanted to be able to remove the mantel in case I upgrade the tile surround, so I pre-drilled three holes in the top and inserted screws to secure in place. I did all this by myself with no help, no extra pair of hands, so I give this 5 stars for ease of installation. The workmanship is stellar and barely needed sanding. It arrived in 2 days in a heavy-duty corrugated box - well packed, and within my budget. Once painted, this took me under 30 minutes to install. I've since covered it with garland, but that is exactly what I'd planned. Ready for Santa! I highly recommend this product!!! I LOVE IT! And you will too!

We ordered the unfinished mantel and the white oak has a beautiful wood grain. All it took is a little light sanding and then it was ready for the stain. It looks great!

This mantel is exactly what I was looking for, not fancy but not plain. It's very nice wood. My guy sanded it a little and just put a coat of urethane on it. It brought out the grain and it just looked perfect.

The mantel is well built and inexpensive for what you get. Mine had some splits and beat up sections but filler and sandpaper made it good. To do this job remember you need an Architrave and two pilasters to complete the surround. This is a great starter piece and once you add the rest it will look great. Remember it is "paint grade".

Well built for the price. Looks very nice. Would have loved to install it. However, came damaged. The packaging sucks something terrible! IN FACT, IT HAD NO INTERNAL PACKING. It rattles around loose inside the carton. Came damaged at both ends. I sent the first one back. The replacement (scond one), was more damaged than the first. It had damaged and split end at the joints. The package was not damaged, in this second one, but the unit was. So, you may draw your own conclusions - probably send damaged goods in the first place. Sent that back as well. I took the chance that I might get an undamaged unit, or superficially damaged only, such that I could rehab and use it; this in spite of reading the damage reports of the other kind reviewers. I experienced much the same! Too bad that the wholesaler does not respect this well made product enough to include simple internal packing to safeguard it from damage. I am also surprised that Amazon has not taken notice, in spite of all the write ups and the returns. The returns cost Amazon money....what gives?

Great looking product for the price. The only problem is that the shelf is packaged and delivered in a carton box with no other protection. I order two of these shelves and one shelf was received with a damaged corner. The second shelf was fine. I blended out the damaged corner by sanding it down to a smooth surface, If damage was more severe then I would have asked for a replacement. Despite the lack of packaging protection, these shelves look great for my back bar. Product description is as advertised.
