What changes were made from the sennheiser hd 201 model to the 206? they look identical but presumably something is different

The previous answer is incorrect, both the HD 201 and HD 206 are closed back headphones. The products are identical other than the model number and the packaging.

The cord is about 3 yards (>9') not counting the part that splits to a "V" near the ear cup which is an additional 12".

Is the chord detachable?

No. It is a long chord and can get in the way. I use a small cable tie (from Lowe's or Home Depot) to shorten it and help manage it when I don't need the full length.
