An underrated upgrade to your Jeep TJ or LJ! Here are some tips...
I really like the look on my 04 Jeep TJ Unlimited of a spare tire delete. Easier to open, access, and close the gate, better visibility, less weight, etc. You just have to be comfortable riding around town without a spare (I am in my situation). I looked everywhere for one of these that covered the plastic vent, moved the tag to the new location, had a LED third brake light, and had an integrated tag light - this was the only option I found! Glad I did, no regrets.Very happy with the outcome and installation was a breeze - but not without some work for the tag light. It's not a product issue, its how to make it work flawlessly with what a stock Jeep provides. Here's what I did:I removed the plastic tailgate vent completely - mine was deteriorating anyway. You won't be able to see it when the kit is mounted and allows for easier access to wiring anyway.I rerouted the brake light wires already there that come out of the grommet on the bottom right of the gate through the tailgate (it's mostly hollow) and out the vent hole the new kit covers. Easy hook up of two wires already there behind the kit. Quadratec sells a plastic plug to seal the now open hole that the wires used to come out of (search "TJ Tailgate Plug"). It's less than $5.For the new tag light (white LED under the new third brake light that lights up your new tag location at night) you have to tap into your tail light power, where the tag light is only on when your lights are on, as its not intended to be operated by the brake light (its only supposed to be constant on with the lights on). On the TJ and LJ, there's a plastic trim piece "wedge" on the inside bottom hinge side of the gate where the brake light wires connect to the jeep tub harness - they are like metal pads that make contact when closed. I removed that cover and ran the wires from the new tag light (from the kit) through a hole I made in the plastic cover, into/under the tub carpet and drilled into the top tub (under the carpet near the roll bar mount) to tap into the passenger tail light wire (which sits in the tub cavity behind the passenger tail light, accessible from under the jeep too by removing a plastic trim piece). Be sure to add a ground after you tap into the tail light power (again, not brake light power) or the light won't work. While doing this, I installed a back up camera as well and mounted it in one of the existing holes on the tailgate where the tire carrier was, next to the new kit. Ran that wire into the new kit and out the plastic wedge trim piece inside. I wire wrapped it along with the tag light wiring so it's one "harness". Install the trip piece back to the gate. Gate opens and closes fine with no interference with the wire wrap (give it a little slack so it doesn't interfere with the "feet" that contact when the gate closes to power the brake lights).Remove the original license plate/tag and mount, mount your tag to the new location and enjoy the clean look! The ONLY problem with this kit, which may be a state specific thing, is that I could only mount my license plate with two of the supplied 4 bolts. All 4 didn't line up to the slots on the kit. Two on the top of the plate held just fine.Final touch - the holes now left from the removal of the tire snubbers and old plate bracket, I filled by installing stainless button head screws (M6x1 size - maybe 3/4 inch length). And, where the drivers side tail light has the integrated tag light, put a reflective american flag underneath it as not to "waste" the light at night. And now I have a clean look, third brake light, tag light and back up cam!
