Sharing Love Abundantly in Special Needs Families

I purchased this book as a potential resource for coaching parents of children with special needs. And it will be a wonderful resource. What I like most is that the authors remind readers that love is a universal need - whether disabled or not. Learning to interact with disabled love ones, friends, students in ways that make them feel loved can help to foster their full potential. I have already shared this with my son's teacher, and given her ideas about how she can use his love language to more effectively engage him. I will also employ some of the strategies mentioned with my own family. I wish I'd had this book sooner to help navigate some of the complexities of being a special family. My new favorite quote for us: "Our family may never be typical, yet we are living and loving well" (p.152).

Jolene and Gary do an excellent job in showing how to use the love languages in families where there are special needs children. They look at the various relationships-marital,typical siblings, and talk through how necessary the love languages are for each of these dynamics. They give great examples on how to use the 5 love languages with our children with special needs. They are easy to implement, and don’t need to cost much money, some are free! I like how they include self care, and also a chapter on how others can speak the love language of the parent-again, giving concrete examples for those in your support circle. I love the focus on relationship and building love and trust with each person in the way they feel loved, thus getting the best from that other person as well. Well done, and highly recommend!

The 5 Love Languages are a great concepts, but I struggled to apply them to my kids with special needs. This book gives specific examples and suggestions not only for loving my kids well through their oen Love Languages, but also how to help my husband and I do the same for each other even while we deal with the stressors unique to special needs families.Disclosure: I received a copy of the book from the publisher for the purpose of reviewing it. This book is fabulous! I have recommended this book to a friend and she loved it so much she bought a copy for her adult daughter.

A much needed book for anyone who is touched by special needs including family, friends and community.
