Feathers!
2019 Mattel Jurassic World Dino Rivals “Attack Pack” Mononykus When Mononykus was revealed to be one of the species scheduled for Mattel’s Dino Rivals lineup, I was very happy. This bizarre little theropod has only been captured in figure form one other time, as far as I’m aware. I was even more excited when I saw the final product, because it is the first Jurassic World figure to sport fully formed feathers. Those feathers are very well done, with lots of minute detail. As this figure is based on the statues seen in Lockwood Manor in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the feathers are limited to the arms and tail. The rest of the body is covered in fine scalation. My favorite touch is that the top of the tail is scaled all the way to the very tip, with the feathers growing only from the sides and bottom. The paint scheme is very nice. The main body is a blue-grey with dark flecks. The head and stripes are a dark purplish (The pattern design reminds me of a baby Emu), the feet are a bird-like orange, and it has a reddish patch on the throat. It has bright yellow eyes with round bird-like pupils. They are very well painted on my figure, with only very minor sloppiness on the left side. Unfortunately, the claws are not painted, including the namesake arm claws. The teeth are also left unpainted. Articulations are limited, as is usual with the “Attack Pack” range. The arms and legs move forward and back, the neck moves up and down in the same manner as the Gallimimus figures, and the tail can rotate. This is among the best of the “Attack Pack” range. A few imperfections keep it from being my favorite, but it’s still a must buy. I hope Mattel continues this trend of introducing kids and collectors to more obscure species. I also hope they get a chance to make a fully feathered dinosaur soon as well, because they’ve proven that they’re capable of making some high quality feather sculpts.
