Daughter Loves It
My 9 year old daughter saw one of these at Wally and had to have one. I suggested she include it in her letter to Santa (ya, she still believes and will continue to let her until one of her classmates clues her in). So, Santa brought her this one. Very good price in comparison to other vendors (I have to admit I had what Amazon has done to many of our mom and pops but damn, in this economy it is hard not to purchase from Amazon with their almost always lower price, free shipping, no tax, etc.).It works very well. She recorded her "password" on high quality and even she has to say it back exactly or it won't let her in. I have tried it and it won't let me in either. There is a reset so I as a parent (or anyone else) could reset it but then she would know and why? She is very honest and why shouldn't she have her "private" journal. As a divorced dad, I think she should have her own place to record her thoughts and secrets.

impressive!
I read a lot of reviews about different journals and this one had a pretty good one for the price so I went along and got it for my 7 year old step daughter who absolutely loves writing journal entries. She also has a 2 year old brother who loves nothing more than to get into her stuff and color on it or something so I decided to get her something with some privacy. This little journal is true to the voice activated password. My son grabbed it and tried numerous times to break in with his voice and it declined every time. I also tried just to test how good it really was and wouldn't open for me either. My step daughter also had to make sure to say it the same way every time because with different voice tones it wouldn't open for her either. She absolutely loved the black light feauture as well. She would write things and run up to me and say "Do you think anything is written on this page?" and when I would respond "No" she would flip on the black light and say "Ha! well I did!!"The only problem we had with the item was that the latch broke after only a few hours of play. I contacted amazon and they have the most incredible customer service I have ever seen. They sent a brand new one immediately and even put it on a one day shipping. We haven't had any problems with the new one at all!I would recommend this item!!

Cute gifts for girls
Gave this to my daughter for her 9 birthday and she loved it . She takes it every where she goes .She loves the fact that it's has this voice activation password. And she constantly changing her password. She loves the fact that when me and her dad try. It's said password not recognize and the alarm goes off. She's even more in love with the fact that she can write some thing with the special pen and use LED light to read what's written .She brought it to church on Sunday and all the little kids were writing in her journal and reading back with the LEDThey love it ....

Fathers: You Will Look and Sound Ridiculous Trying to Crack This One
Got one for my daughter a few years ago. She was just learning to write, and loves to draw. With two other younger sisters sharing a room, she loved the idea of having something 'secret' she could keep. The voice password works surprisingly well: I tried opening it, even saying the right word in the wrong voice will not open it! I then tried to imitate her 8-YO girl voice to the best of my ability for several minutes, only to have my wife yell at me to STOP IT because it was so ridiculous and weirdly annoying to her who was sitting nearby, on the phone. The kids had a good laugh. The secret light thingy works well too, but she doesn't seem to use it as much. All was well until she had a friend come over, and play with it without permission. After the friend was done, she tossed it on the bed, fell off the bed, and broke it. We had to buy another one. Dangit

Overall satisfied with this item
This was the main gift my daughter asked for from Santa for Christmas. She is almost 5 (so below the recommended age for this product), but it's what she wanted. I'm glad I bought it because she LOVES it. She recorded her own password, greetings and alert. We had to set the security to low and even then experienced some issues with the journal not recognizing her voice/password. But we changed her password and haven't had any more issues. The notebook and hidden compartment are really small, especially considering the item itself isn't small, so you'd think they could have fit a larger notebook. It's more than enough for a small child, but I imagine an older child (10+) would lose interest quickly. My daughter is in pre-school and can only spell a few words, so she mostly draws pictures. She utilizes the black light 99% of the time and for the price I'd say the light works great. Overall this was a great purchase.

catches interest of young girls
My daughter asked for this for her ninth birthday. We have had it for about 3 weeks now. It has been somewhat frustrating for her since it frequently doesn't recognize the password; however, once I showed her how to reset it, she is satisfied with resetting it as needed. As most girls of her age, she likes the idea that she has privacy, and it has a space for her to put things (even though, when figuring out my "indifference," she tells me- and shows me- what she is putting there! So sweet!). She has hardly written a thing in it, though, and primarily enjoys exercising the fact that it opens to her voice. Overall, it is hokey, but it plays on this age girls' desires and imagination; so... if she likes it, well... is it worth purchasing for a few weeks of passing interest? Perhaps.

My niece acted like at first she didn't want it....Until I said she could have a Rainbow Loom instead! Of course...
she got both, but she ripped this out of my hands at the thought of not getting it! It was funny and on Christmas.... A classmate of hers had it, so she knew about it, but I will admit she could not figure out how to get it to work, and I spent about 20-30 minutes messing around then reading the instruction manual before it would work. The sound recognition is not perfect, but for being a plastic journal that has intentions of locking and being sound activated, it is a great deal in my opinion. i REALLY like how she will know if somebody reset it... Yes you can "break in", but she will know! That is a great feature.
