It doesn't take much watching over and over a bunch of teenagers gather in a cabin in the woods for a night of fun, be stalked by a maniac killer and make stupid mistakes that end up costing them their lives until you snap and throw away the movie disc, itching for a bit of originality in your horror films and less dumb protagonists. Well, thankfully for you, this game delivers. Until Dawn is a horror adventure game on the vein of Telltale's The Walking Dead or Heavy Rain: minimalistic gameplay focused on storytelling and a narrative that changes based on your decisions. Take that into account foremost: this isn't an action game. Save for quick-time events at certain points it's a slow-paced story-driven game with mild puzzles that relies in character interaction instead of combat. The interesting thing about it is that, while the game follows horror movie tropes very closely, it actually allows you to make rational decisions rather than behave like a complete idiot. Sure, you can make mistakes like a normal person, but no longer you will scream at the screen after watching a character do something irritatingly idiotic. Granted, you can get characters harmed or even killed by mistake if you're not careful, particularly seeing how many decisions are split-second ones that require some very quick thinking, or if you deliberately decide to do something dumb, but if you play your cards right every playable character in the story can survive (well, save for certain ones in the introductory level, but that event is precisely what kickstarts the plot of the game, so it's understandable). Visually, the game is stunning. The horror-movie vibe feels great due to the way the game plays with lighting, and the fact that the characters are motion captured from real people. Some well known actors show up here, like Hayden Panettiere, Rami Malek and Peter Stormare, and their voice work and expertly-captured facial expressions favor the game in a magnificent way. Due to how many of the game's events play out differently due to your decisions, there's a lot of replayability here, even if you don't care about trophies (but if you do, they're generally easy to get, you'll just need a few playthroughs to get them all), so I say it's very much worth the price.
