The best translation of this great poem that I have read so far, with informative commentary. Highly recommended.

This translation by Peter Green is outstanding. It's so vivid one can't help but picture the mortal battle scenes, the bickering immortals, and the moping Achilles. The pounding rhythm of the lines is like horse's hooves carrying the reader onward. The story itself is a moving tale of longings and loss, of glory and courage, of friendships and heartbreak.The introductory notes are excellent and explain the place of the tale within the larger setting of the various myths. I read them first before reading the text and then again after finishing (when I knew the characters and they made more sense). There's a chapter synopsis at the end which I didn't read, but which I suppose would help a student prior to a test. There's an invaluable list of characters that explains who they are, whom they're related to, and a bit about their actions in both this and other works--since this was my first time reading "The Iliad," I referred to it regularly. Outstanding!
