Hello, Thank you for contacting ZVOX earlier. The ZVOX is compatible with just about any TV that was made in the last 5 years that includes an optical port... Sorry for the inconvenience, this item comes with an ‘Auto Standby’ feature activated, which will automatically power the sound bar off after about 20-minutes of not receiving an audio signal. Some televisions may cause the sound bar to turn off in the middle of a program due to a weak audio signal. If you find that your AccuVoice TV Sound bar is turning off while you are watching TV, you can follow the steps below to disable that feature: While the speaker is On, press and hold the power button on the ZVOX remote for 5 seconds and NoAs will appear on the display. The system should not shut down automatically and if it does please contact us again.

Will this be loud enough for a large room

Hello, Thank you for contacting ZVOX earlier. This speaker contains a 24 watt internal amp and can reach a person with clear sound up to 20 feet away from the TV set. Any further than that you may want to consider a larger model such as the SB380/

Would it work with a 17 year old Sony Bravia flatscreen tv

If the TV has either an optical (Toslink) audio output or an analog audio output (headphone jack or RCA jacks labeled out) the Zvox should work perfectly. To give you a more definitive answer I would need your TV's model number.
