Q: I need to lift something that weighs 8000lbs. How close to the rating has anybody lifted with these models?

Honestly, if you are going to lift something 8,000 lbs, don't buy a $45 hoist rated at 10,000 lbs. Buy something that has at least twice the load capacity.

Q: where is this hoist made?

CHINA, however, it works unbelievably well. You can hoist whatever with one hand.

Q: I need to lift 2,000 lbs with a device factor of safety of two, will this work?

I have the baby brother to this hoist. Mine is the 1ton (2000lb). I can only comment on that, but the unit, at least mine is well made and works with ease.

Q: How long is the chain? can it be extended?

The chain reaches @6 feet if you were to add a chain on the hook it could be extended
