It smells just like Aveda’s shampure. I notice the smell when I apply it, but it’s not as strong as a perfume and the smell does not linger.

Q: Does it come with a top to cover the applicator, or does it close somehow? Thinking of how it would be to take in my purse or travel with, etc.

You twist the top to close it. You should be able to put in purse, but I would put inside a bag of some sort just to be sure at first.
