Yes but a good pair of plyers will work

Q: Will a hammer work on the crimpers?

I doubt it. Needle nose pliers work best, at least some type of pliers. It has to be crimped closed.

Q: What type of SS is it (304?), what diameter is the wire (without the coating)

I don’t know the thickness but I can tell you this wire is terrible for picture hanging. It doesn’t bend and wrap around itself like regular picture frame wire. I cannot use it and should have reviewed it when I bought it.

This is a very good question. I couldn't find any actual sizing on the crimping loop. Looks like the best thing to do is search for crimping loop sleeve that fit a 1.5mm (1/16 inch) diameter wire.
