What I understood was that the stone, as it is ceramic is measured in microns. This stone I saw advertised as 3 micron which converts to 8,000 grit. I love mine. The many tiny hills and valleys on the ceramic surface are very apparent after sharpening a knife because the tops of the hills get dirty but the valleys do not. But even without being perfectly flat the ceramic works well.
