Review: Quiet enough for radio use - I had tried to design my own buck converter, taking the voltage from 14V to 5V and found that it was very difficult to do this reliably and with minimal noise on the output. I was looking to power an RF circuit. This Drok DC Buck Converter is amazing! It can handle the job with ease, and the output is very clean allowing my RF circuit to function properly. This converter has a place on the plastic housing for a fan, but so far heat has never been an issue while running at 1 amp or less. There are a few things to watch out for! First, make sure you have the converter set to the correct voltage before connecting power to your project. Secondly, the USB port can operate at voltage that are higher than normal USB spec. If you have the converter set to output 10V, the USB will also be 10V, instead of the normal 5V. This could damage equipment if you aren't aware. Next, the USB port does no remain enabled during a power off/on sequence. The converter WILL remember the voltage setting, but the port disables until you manually re-enable it. Idle current consumption is around 15-20ma at 14VDC, even with the display backlight turned off. Connections are all made using USB or screw terminals. Overall a top performer and good value for the price!

**Q: Is the usb output fixed or is it adjustable?**
A: It's not fixed. I had it as high as 13.3 volts in my application of the USB connector.  You need to set output to 5v before using any standard usb device.

**Q: In the instructions it says to use a diode if using for charging, where does the diode go?**
A: There are two good answers here; when charging a battery with this converter, a series diode should be placed between this device's output and the battery to prevent the battery from attempting to backcharge this device if this device's output drops below battery voltage.

In addition... if this device is used as a charge controller for a phototaic (solar) panel, a series diode should also be placed between the panel and this device to ensure that this device will never attempt to backcharge the panel.

I suggest the use of a fairly significant Schottky diode for either application.

**Q: Constant output voltage with changing input voltage? If I have solar panels as an input with a chaning voltage (+-. 5V) will this affect the output?**
A: Check the limit of input shown in the instruction manual.  This unit will regulate voltage or amperage, but not both at the same time.

I was looking to power an RF circuit. This Drok DC Buck Converter is amazing! It can handle the job with ease, and the output is very clean allowing my RF circuit to function properly.
