You can boost the sound level in a number of ways. There are tons of effects including a graphic eq to maybe punch up a recording, or lower the high frequencies to silence hiss. It has an amplifier effect too. However you can’t do it as it’s recording, you have to wait until once it’s all recorded and you see it looks/sounds too low in volume. If the whole recording looks/sounds too low, you hit select and “choose all” then go to “Effects”, which drops down a list of all the effects. You want “amplifier” and click it and it will recommend the highest it can go without clipping (overloading), I always go with a little lower than they say as it can distort very easily. Do it right and you’ll be amazed at how easy it all was and how much better your stuff sounds, Digitally! Also to get the input connected, plug in a sound source to test it out. If you hit pause and record you should see the sound meter moving. If no sound and you’re absolutely sure there’s audible content coming across those red and white cables and you’re sure you checked everything is plugged in and you have the mic input set to 100% - and no sound - you just may have to select the input from the drop down list. Just under the red dot record button. You should see a pic of a mic next to the box. When you find; “Microphone Array USB PnP (Audio Device”). - that’s it! This device! So click on that and you should now see the sound meter picking up the test material you’re playing. Works best with line level inputs. Like don’t use a headphone out jack and into the V-TOP Device bc you can raise and lower the sound but it may make it too loud for your recording. Myself, I used the “line out” on the back of my stereo, and it works flawlessly. I originally tried the line out directly from the cassette deck and the sound was not as good, but the Onkyo receiver was giving it a smoother sound so I recorded out of the “line out” jacks on the back of my Onkyo Amp. I needed to reference some of those tapes again. The sound only plays through the left channel on my headphones. To get the audio to play through both channels, I thought digitizing the tapes was the best solution. I also figured the digital files could be loaded onto my phone so I could listen to them anywhere at any time when I needed to. It was easy to get working. I just plugged the USB A end of the adapter into my iMac and the 3.5 mm plug on the other end of the adapter into the headphone jack on the tape player. I then started up Garage Band on the Mac, selected "monitor" in the software, pressed play on the tape player, and started to hear sound. I didn't need any additional software or drivers. It just worked out of the box. The sound is not perfect. I'm getting a soft electrical hum that shouldn't be there, so this probably isn't the right solution if your final output needs to be high quality audio. Then again, I'm not an electrical or sound engineer so maybe there's a way to filter that sound out, or I've got a bad jack somewhere. Those with more knowledge may be able to weigh in. For my project, the tape audio quality is so low that the additional hum isn't a problem. I was also pleased to discover that GarageBand automatically outputs the single channel mono audio to both channels, so I didn't need to configure anything to get the result I was looking for.
