Great Eye Witness Accounts of the War of 1876-77
Marc Abrams' "Sioux War Dispatches" is a new classic of the genre. Combining a well written, highly informative and witty narrative with the first-hand accounts of newspapermen who covered the war, Abrams has created a vivid and highly readable book that will appeal not only to the specialist, but also students and general readers. The author has scoured newspaper accounts of the Indian Wars to extract the most accurate and historically important newspaper accounts of events from the Great Sioux War of 1876-77 (including the Battle of the Little Bighorn; Custer's Last Stand). The narrative ia augmented with excerpts from official reports where appropriate to balance the journalists' views. Although the accounts reflect the society and age that produced them, the author's narrative balances any nineteenth century ethnocentric bias and the reader may be surprised at number of accounts that gave a sympathetic view of the Sioux and Cheyennes. There is nothing dry about this book. Marc Abrams has accomplished the difficult task of forging an historical narrative that has an immediacy that makes you want to keep reading. This work would be particularly useful for those studying this period in American history. The book is fully illustrated and has some of the best maps of this conflict that this reviewer has seen. Highly recommended. A must read.

Must have view into the past!
This book presents first hand accounts of those crucial historical events. I have long believed that to best understand history one needs to read what was written at the time. Things get foggy- subject to more distortions from winners and losers and often over analyzing as distance occurs. This work is an amazing view into the past covering views from many sources. I highly recommend it to the serious student of these times and events.
