    Needed replacement fan

*by J***P on Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2014*

My four year old Microsoft replacement 360 gave me the overheat red rings earlier in the week. Let it cool down and started it up and noticed one of the fans wasn't spinning. Started looking online and came across this fan. Since my xbox is WAY out of warranty I decided to give it a shot at replacing the fan myself. Found a couple good guides online and ordered not only the fan but also a $7 tool kit. That $7 was well spent! I highly recommend getting the kit. Being a Prime member I received the fan and tool kit within two days and disconnected all the misc wires from my 360. Following the online instructions to pull the xbox apart was amazingly easy. There was a TON of lint/dog hair still in the case even though I regularly can air all the vents. Replacing the fan is super simple and putting the unit back together was a snap. I was really amazed how quick the entire process was. I moved it back to the tv and hooked everything up, pushed the power button and..... NOTHING. WTF? I was terrified I had fried something. Before losing it I followed the power cord and it had come loose from where it plugs into the brick! Everything re-plugged and hit the power button and SWEET!. Nice green glow from back of the unit and running fine. It has been three days so far and everything is working fine. Three days might not be long you are thinking but that is a Friday, Saturday and Sunday of my son playing GTA5, COD Ghosts, BF4 and downloading Saints Row 3 (for free). He stress tested it VERY well. My less than professional opinion on the fan is as follows:Fan noise - My fan was apparently dying, but even at its prime, this new fan is much quieter.Air flow - Flows a lot more air than old unit with one dead fan :) It does seem to push more air out the back than I remember. Part may be also to opening the case and pulling lint out.Heat - After my son running the 360 for a good 5 plus hours the side of the case was barely warm. It used to be hot to the touch.Installation. - Can you change a light bulb? Can you follow instructions? If yes then you can install this fan. Please note, the fan has NO instructions. Go online to a site like llama.com and follow their 360 disassembly guide. Also i HIGHLY reccommed getting the $7 xbox tool kit. Money well spent.Overall this was a great buy and hope to get another year out of the 360 before I upgrade to a One. If anything happens with the fan I will update this review. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Jeff

    It works

It was easier to replace this fan than I thought. A bit scary to open your Xbox but once your warranty is over, why not, right?I had a 360 Elite where the DVD drive died; it made grinding noises for a while then refused to open. From the day I bought the system the drive was crazy loud. I ended up returning it to Microsoft for repair even though the unit was out of warranty. The M$ repair service was quick, they ended up just replacing my box with what I assume was a refurb. The new DVD drive was quiet, but the new fans were amazingly noisy, really shockly noisy where it almost seemed like I was on a hidden camera TV show or something. So I traded in an absurdly loud drive for a ridiculously loud set of fans. I was trying so hard to be a happy camper too.I use the 360 as a Media Center connected device, and with Netflix being so wonderful as well, I figured it's time to replace those horrific stock fans since my warranty is shot. The new fans are a tiny bit quieter than the fans I had originally, and a fair amount quieter than the joke fans that came on my refurbed unit. The green coloring may be interesting to you if you are the type of person who puts flame or "no fear" stickers on your car, or if you are too young to drive.I saw a different review that claimed the new fans made about 90% of the noise of the original fans. That seems about right. To restate, you will reduce your noise by about 10%, and add a questionable green glow.Anything to make those fans quieter is worth it to me. Come on Microsoft, hop on the clue bus and work on the fan noise for your next version of this otherwise fantastic console.

    Not everything that was promised

*by M***Z on Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2012*

So almost two years ago, my Xbox 360 Elite RRODed, and I was completely confused on what to do and how to fix it. First I bought an online guide on how to fix it myself, but I didn't have the proper tools yet, so I ordered those, and they were quite handy and worked like a charm. But then I started to read up more online and I read that switching my fan and installing new mini-heatsinks along with the XCM Core Cooler V2 fans would help prevent the RROD from returning. My problem is that first of all, my order took a while to come, and my xbox RRODed again...permanently this time, and I wonder if these "upgrades" to my Xbox would have even helped. Second, I specifically ordered a GREEN fan, but I got a RED one instead. Normally that's not a problem, but I live outside the US, and shipping the item back to the seller and possibly getting a replacement for FREE would cost me more money. Third, when I did install the fan, it wouldn't fit in properly. The fans of an Xbox 360 need to click in, this was too big, and the little nodges on the top were too small, so it wouldn't stay in place properly, and this cause the fan to occasionally hit the sides of the inside of my Xbox which caused a lot of noise. In the end, I ended up thrashing my Elite and the +100 dollars I spent trying to fix it, and just bought a 4gb slim and put my HDD in there. So far it's working just fine, no complaints. But I still have my Elite and the parts I ordered, and occasionally I look at them and wonder, would it really have worked?
