Real Buckwheat Kasha (Recipe Included)
Yes, this is buckwheat kasha as it should be, done exactly right. No, it is not overtoasted. Believe me, I know what I am talking about. Where I grew up, buckwheat kasha was a pantry staple. I had it as often as my grandma could get it, and would have more, but unfortunately this grain was scarce, just as pretty much every quality food in the Soviet Union. When I moved to the U.S., I started looking for buckwheat kasha. American made buckwheat grain is usually untoasted, so I did not know what to do with it. For obvious reasons, I refuse to buy Russian. Some time ago, I found Polish grain on Amazon. It was pretty good, but within a year or so, it changed for the worse and was cooking mushy, which is completely wrong. There was also Ukrainian, but they have problems with export now.Recently I found this product. The picture in the listing looked right, and some reviewers claimed it was overtoasted, so I decided to give it a try. It turned out simply great! I was fearing that it will disappear or change, like the Polish product (and many other good things), so within a month I ordered 10 pounds more. By this time, the price went 10% up and the grain arrived in a different packaging (no zip lock), but fortunately, it is still the same product and the same great quality. For those who are intrigued and want to try Real Buckwheat Kasha, here is the recipe (and disregard the one on the package, it makes no sense whatsoever):Put 1 cup of buckwheat and 1.75 cup of water into a pot (salt to taste, of course), bring to boil and boil without the lid for 1 minute (sic!). Reduce the heat, put on the lid, close it tightly (add a weight if needed), and simmer for 10 minutes. Do not open the lid; let it stay for another 10 minutes. Now it is ready. In the pictures, you can see how it should look like, in the pot and on the plate. The grains should all be separated. If it is cooked mushy, it’s a different dish (also edible, but much inferior to my taste).Buckwheat kasha thus prepared makes great side for pork dishes (shown in the picture with pork goulash). Served with milk, it’s a perfect breakfast cereal (extra salt is advisable). My wife adds sugar and has the milk in a cup next to her plate, while I like mine with a half cup of whole milk poured right into, no sugar. Enjoy!

wonderful, and it's a great deal!
This stuff is great, and it's a great deal too! I like to mix it with other grains/pseudocerials in a rice cooker.I will mixs it with quinoa, kaniwa, oats, etc. If it's breakfast, I will open the rice cooker lid and crack a couple of eggs over the top for the last couple of minutes. Super yummy!Thish kashha seems to be very lightly roasted (compared to other kasha I've ad). but i'm no expert. I imagine, you could get a rich deep flavor if you pan fried the stuff for a couple of minutes in a mixture of toasted sesame oil (for the flavor) and coconut/hemp oil (for thermal stability) before you add the water, boil and simmer 10 minutes. (iahven't tried it thougt)another trick with kasha, is you can bring 3 or 4 parts water to a good boil, and then pour ini one part kasha and boil it vigorously (instead of cover/simmer like you would with rice). this causes the kasha to puff and fluff. especially if you stir it with a fork or a whisk while boiling. This is the way to make a healthful substitute for mashed potatoes. you can add coconut oil or butter and salt and pepper to taste.great stuff.

Will buy as needed again
This is a good quality buckwheat. Our kids love it. Clean, comparing to many other we bought.

Fresh and delicious
I don’t have much experience with kasha to compare it with. But by the color, integrity and cleanness I can tell this is of good quality. Cooking was a breeze and the result was even and just the right texture. Will repurchase once I run out.

Great product
When I learned that buckwheat had more fiber and nutrition than oatmeal, I decided to try it. This brand is my favorite. I soak it overnight in water and heat for a minute in the microwave the next morning. Delicious and easy!

Very fine type of kasha.
I used to look out for this in the UK. It was seasonal I think.. It seems to be a particular type of buckwheat, the grains are distinctive, finely modeled with slightly concave sides, the colour a darker brown than usual. The flavour is wonderful! I do hope this type of grain is what one would get from this seller every time but one of the photographs on the label looks like a more ordinary type of buckwheat. In any case it is good to find organic Kasha..

Dry tumbling media use.
I have been using this product in my dry tumbler to clean brass cases. It is dust free but clogs up in small bottle neck cases but works great in pistol cases.

Not bad at all
This is a tasty, perfectly roasted buckwheat. Those who say it’s burnt, are very wrong. When buckwheat is not roasted enough, it turns into mush when cooked. This buckwheat stays together, each grain separates easily once cooked, as it should.
