I had professor Elliot for a class and I am now basing my dissertation around this work.Elliots book is a delightful read and a must for any historian who wants to read about Albion Tourgee.

Excellent biography of a fascinating man, now largely forgotten, whose life intersects with many of the central political issues of the decades after the Civil War and highlights the tragedy of the nation's abandonment of the principles it fought for in the Civil War.
