Building the B-17 Flying Fortress: A Detailed Look at Manufacturing Boeing’s Legendary World War II Bomber in Original Photos

Needs an index
This is really useful as a photographic record of the building of the B-17. Some of the photo captions seem almost non-sensical. But it really needs an index to easily locate specific subjects you may want to find. If you want to look up, for example the Douglas modification centre, you just have to keep flicking back and forth through the book.

Absolutely Necessary
This book is EXTREMELY detailed, and the pictures and text are amazing. It is a must have for any officianado of the B-17.It is beyond comprehension what the United States used to be capable of, production wise, regarding the number of aircraft produced during WWII. And EVERYTHING was made in America! I seriously doubt we could do that again.Anyway, this is a great read and I highly recommend it.

Fascinating look at building the B-17 by Boeing, Lockheed-Vega, and Douglas
I already had a number of books on the B-17, but none done on such a meticulous and detailed scale as this one. Together, the photos and their most illuminating captions are terrific and not duplicated in scale or quality by any other book I have.My namesake uncle (my mom's brother) was a B-17 pilot killed in December 1943 (training crash in Texas while in 4-engine school at Roswell Army Airfield); and my great-uncle (my grandmother's brother) worked at the Lockheed Vega factory in Burbank building B-17s; so my keen interest in this book is understandable and significant.I also learned various tidbits of information I did not know before. For example, the fact that Lockheed-Vega was first to stagger the cheek guns on the "G" model on the actual production line even before Boeing or Douglas did.The paper and print quality is A+; although I concur with one reviewer's wish for it to have been a hardbound version instead of paperback; but mine appears pretty sturdy, in fact, sturdier than I expected. For any genuine B-17 fan, this book is one not to be missed. From so many aspects, the reader of this book can only marvel and conclude "What an era!"
