The Canterbury Tales: Fully Annotated Edition (Evergreens)

Where it all Began.
This probably isn't your first encounter with Chaucer. If it is, I might recommend a different edition; perhaps one that has the original text and the modern English translation on facing pages. Instead, this edition's format puts definitions, clarifications, and expanded information into footnotes; there if you want them, invisible if you don't. I love it! There are times when I'm re-reading familiar passages just for the enjoyment of the poetry, and I ignore the note-numbers and asterisks. Other times, I'm reading to learn the stories, and the notes are very useful. Absolutely, download this, and you'll always have something to read.

Not my favorite translation. This is in a only slightly more modern than the olde English version. But what a steal for a gorgeous leather bound book!!

Not as fully annotated as expected
This is basically a reprint of the Ellesmere manuscript into modern type but in Middle English, with some footnotes to clarify a few of the Middle English terms. However, it lacks the illustrations that make the Ellesmere version famous.Nowhere is there an explanation why the Ellesmere was chosen over the Hengwrt Manuscript, and none of the footnotes seem to relate to the significant textual differences between the two. The editors of the Riverside Chaucer (3rd edition), among others, consider the Ellesmere edition to have been edited and altered by its scribe to suit the scribe's sense of meter, and they use the Hengwrt as their basis. It is far from being "fully" annotated as the sales page suggests: it is only minimally so. This edition's notes are limited to explaining some of the original word meanings; there is no contextual information to explain, for example, what a reeve, a summoner, or a manciple were in their daily lives. There is nothing to explain the details of their clothes, armour, jewellery, why they were on a pilgrimage and where they were going, etc. If you're looking for a comprehensive, annotated edition, look elsewhere (Penguin has a better, illustrated edition based on the Coghill translation into modern English verse). There are some endnotes, but with no authorship or source given, they lack academic credibility. Most of these pages read like someone's exam essay for school. For this, or any other edition of the Canterbury Tales in Middle English, I recommend you also get a dictionary or glossary of Middle English to accompany your reading. But if you really want something better in ME, I recommend you get the Penguin edition with its fulsome notes and better scholarship. If you want to read all of Chaucer's works in ME, then get the Riverside edition. I cannot recommend this edition to any reader.

A Great Book. My Book Is Damaged
The book has a dent punctured onto the cover page and one edge of the book appears to have corroded, etched off.The book, however is new as it appears to be printed in 2019 and pages are thick, high quality print.Remember the language is Old English. I intentionally bought this and not all will be able to comprehend this English.
