The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn: A Novel

Ms. Maxwell has also written some excellent feminist articles on Anne (just google them). In this book, she points out how precarious and rightless the position of women was back then and how hard it was for Anne and Elizabeth to hold their own despite medieval patriarchy and how limited their options often were. It's absolutely understandable to me that Elizabeth wouldn't marry since at the time, married women were grievously deprived of their rights under the law and the domestic violence committed by Henry VIII had sure also kind of traumatized Elizabeth so that she would have been particularly cautious.

Elizabeth 1 receives her mother's diary. It's interesting, the play between Elizabeth's reading of it and how it affects her, and Anne's entries of her life. The viewpoint of Anne is of a kinder and less harsh person than is usually given. There wasn't quite enough of her personal thoughts for me. I had expected more depth of emotion. Worth the read, however.

歴史物じゃなくて、学園青春物の文章でしょう、これは。二十何年の研究の成果と後書きに書いてありましたが、で、何を勉強していたの？　歴史物を数冊読めば、こうはならないはず。　内容がどうとか考えられないほど、無茶な文章に気をとられました。プリンセス・ダイアリーズなら、こういう文章でいいんだけれどね。　あとは称号とか、そういう歴史的なことでも引っかかることがあった気がしますが、すでに、どうでもいいです。
