Encountering the New Testament: A Historical and Theological Survey (Encountering Biblical Studies)

Very beneficial read
I found the book to be well written and challenging. The affirmations of points that I have held for years was refreshing, but there were challenging criticisms that were thought provoking. The book has been a help in my teaching along with my personal understanding.

This is good
My friends always argue with me about the meaning of scriptures. This is a must-have. Get the Old Testament one too. I only regret that you all did not go into a lot of detail about angels and nephelim. Are you trying to give us a reformed secular version of the gospel that has a small universe humans-only view of God and the multi-verse? Just kidding. This is full of accurate historic information. Like all great works, there is room for improvement, but I like it.

Survey That Instructs and Challenges the Reader
Elwell and Yarbrough provide the reader with a very good survey of the New Testament. They attempt to provide the reader information from many aspects in language that is easily understood. They provide the reader with a wide viewpoint of scholarly study but do not attempt to give a specific viewpoint, leaving that to the reader. Each chapter of this book guides the reader to specific books of the New Testament in chronological order. The final chapter gives the reader s summarization of the context of the New Testament relative to the church in the third millennium. Overall I enjoyed this book and have gained new insights on my Christian journey.

Great for beginners
Like the OT Version, I bought this for a class and found it very helpful! Great depth and many interesting historical and archeological insights. This was required for a seminary course and supplemented with other readings. I consider myself a beginner student of the individual NT books. This, by itself, would not be sufficient for an overview of the NT. It is a great supplement that I will return to. I would strongly recommend this for Christian High School upper level or entry level undergrad students.

No Page Numbers
The content of the book is fine, but there were some typos throughout. This was usually the authors referencing the wrong Scripture verse. My biggest complaint is that there are location numbers and not page numbers, and no way to adjust this. Fortunately, I was assigned full chapters at a time, but having page numbers would have made citing easier.

Good Information, Lacks Format
In "Encountering the New Testament", the chapters move sequentially, which reads like a standard text book. It wasn't bad, however I was hoping the format would have been then same as "Encountering the Old Testament" which is broken down like an outline, and contains a chapter summary before an entire section, (i.e. Pentateuch, History, Poetry and Wisdom, Major Prophets, Minor Prophets). In "Encountering the Old Testament" the pre-chapter summaries allowed the reader to understand the intent of each section before diving into each book separately, this lacking in "Encountering the New Testament". The information is still really good, however for someone who hasn't had a formal teaching of the chronology of Paul's travels I found it disorienting.

Nice work, easy to read
Very well written. A great resource tool. Good honest textual criticism approach. Not too theologically deep, but covers just enough to be what the title indicates: a survey. Very good for an introduction to the New Testament. The two authors are theologically conservative and present the material well. Highly recommended.
