Gripping read
I found this a gripping, well-written read. The author skillfully interweaves the three strands of Kurt Cobain's personal odyssey from boyhood in backwater Aberdeen, Washington to international music icon, good background on the community within which he was brought up and the Olympia-Seattle-Washington social and music scene and the wider relation of Cobain and the Seattle music scene to developments in the Bush Sr era. Grunge resonated with a zeitgeist of pessimism and disillusion among young Americans in particular. It's something of a shock to realize how long and difficult the journey was and how short the actual period of "success". I got a very good feel from the narrative for the contradictions of Kurt the man - one minute sensitive or withdrawn artist, the next self-hating dopehead projecting venom. Actually both sides of the same coin. Inevitably this included some fairly frank depictions of less-than-salubrious details. But there were interesting speculations about his psychological development, the effect of drugs and sexual ambivalence and so on that have the ring of truth. No doubt this explains the more lurid reactions of certain other reviewers here who seem to have been shocked to discover their hero had feet of clay. But surely the last thing Kurt Cobain would have claimed for himself would have been some kind of "rock sainthood" or to be placed on a pedestal. This is someone whose musical talent allowed him to escape Aberdeen but not his inner demons. When the first flush of creative inspiration faltered, he succumbed to drugs, depression, an insecure family relationship with the volatile Courtney Love (ploughing her own celebrity furrow) and probably existential disillusionment as well, before he was able to find the further creative leap that may have saved him. A thought-provoking book.
