First key is preparation. Sand but not using coarse sandpaper, use dry cloth to removing sawdust. Then I wipe again using soft cloth and paint thinner. Apply with thin coats making sure to not leave bubbles or brush marks, sand lightly between coats. How many coats depends upon surface use and exposure. A minimum of 3 coats.
