Schaum's Outline of Discrete Mathematics, 3rd Ed. (Schaum's Outline Series)

Thought it is a good book on discrete with caveats. It covers many topics in discrete mathematics well, however as far as proofs are concerned does not have a whole lot, and discreet does deal a lot with proofs and is a very important part of this subject, in my opinion. So if it is exhaustive proof coverage I would not recommend this book, and if I based my review on this I would dock it at least 1 - 2 points. Its explanations are understandable as it is written fairly well. Has many good problems in it and I think it does a good job. I have not read the whole book through so this is only half of the story, but it seems very good. Would suggest you pre-prep for your discreet class with this book at least a few weeks in advance as this will help you immensly as the subject can be difficult at times. Also get a good proof text to handle that portion & you are all set to become a discreet wiz. Came on time & in good shape.

I bought this book on my kindle to help me study discrete math while away from my text book. I was wanting it to supplement the material I am covering in class, so that I can get better than an average grade. It is a supplement, but not for the college level, in my opinion. I am disappointed because the topics it covers really only get down to the surface level of depth. I am having trouble with nested quantifiers, and expressing them in English, given nonsensical sentences in place of math. This is not covered in this book. Neither nested quantifiers or relating propositional logic in English. They define everything in English nicely, but I need help making arguments in English, instead of math. This book is perhaps good for early Math majors, if it is going to serve anyone beyond high school, but the need to transfer English statements and system specifications in English makes this book unsuitable for computer science majors. Additionally, if you want to buy the Kindle version, my opinion is, it does not transfer very well across the mediums of print, given the strange symbols in Discrete Math, and their lacking in most word processing applications. Some symbols are pasted into the book in such a way that they float, making lines too spaced out, and processes difficult to follow.

This is a very helpful outline whether you are taking the class and need a supplement or are just trying to learn the material on your own. The writing is clear and succinct, and there are hundreds and hundreds of practice problems all of which are answered. The topics covered are standard for the topic, so this book will cover everything in your class unless your teacher has some unorthodox lesson plan. My one caveat is that there are occasional errors in the answer keys. This can be frustrating especially if you don't feel confident in your own work. The errors are far and few between for the most part and if you can live with them then you will get much use out of this book. Highly recommended.

If you are reading this review, then chances are you are taking or preparing to take a Discrete Mathematics course. I feel your pain. There's no way around it, Discrete Mathematics is tough stuff. There is hope though. This reference book can be a huge life saver. Now don't get the wrong idea. It will not solve all your problems or give you the test answers, but it will provide additional examples to problems that make your head spin and hopefully help the light bulb to come on.I passed Discrete Mathematics with an A and I have no doubt this book helped.

Did you get stuck with a textbook (like Richard Johnsonbaugh's Discrete Mathematics - Fourth Edition) for your university Computer Science/ Discrete Mathematics course that just doesn't explain the concepts you're trying to learn? I definitely encourage you to purchase this book. However, along with this book you should also buy "2000 Solved Problems in Discrete Mathematics" in Schaum's Solved Problems Series. While the book I'm reviewing here has some problems and solutions, this additional book provides many variations of these problems, allowing you to look at problems from the different angles that will probably show up on your next exam.

Got this book, worked out a few problems. Used to have the same titled book about 20 years ago. It was also great back then. I sold it or donated it to the library since I didn't need it. Great book for practice problems and answers. I highly recommend it for Comp Sci Majors. This is like a fundamental requirement for Comp Sci majors, and I could see and totally understand why.

It was not really helpful and I never used it. Maybe someone else will find some use in it. For the price it was worth getting just in case.

This is a great book and provides good problems and examples for this math subject. This is also a great reference to have nearby for those that are a little rusty in this subject.

A great help for daughter's degree course.

Schaum's Outlines are never going to be classics, but they are sound, inexpensive and good value. Despite having an extensive library of other mathematics texts, I often come back to Schaum's for the worked-out solutions of problems.In my work I often meet software engineers who started out in other disciplines and have had very little exposure to the parts of discrete mathematics that are useful in software engineering. I normally suggest that they use this Schaum's Outline of Discrete Mathematics as a quick primer. So far there have been no complaints!
