Q: can you use this on a canvas?

I haven't tried that yet, but I'm sure you can. It dries pretty fast. It's consistently is compared to the paint you would use on model cars. I love it! It's like having gild leaf without the hassle, at a much better price. This will definitely be a product I keep stocked for all my crafts!
