Chinese Stories for Language Learners: A Treasury of Proverbs and Folktales in Bilingual Chinese and English (Online Audio Recordings Included)

I was excited to find this book and get started but was worried about reading and comprehending all the characters. Between the audio download and the stories being written in both Chinese and English, this set helped me out a ton. I also love the stories in practical usage, making them applicable to modern day issues.

I am not at that level of Mandarin yet so I can’t fully read it, but I can say this book is beautiful and very well made. If they publish more titles in the same style (many languages have two books, so maybe they’ll publish more options), I will definitely buy them. A great resource for any language learners.

If you just want to learn Chinese, study new vocabulary, proverbs, and idiomatic expressions, this book is absolutely perfect. I've been looking for ages for a bilingual book that also focuses on teaching. This book does that, it has the Chinese story in a traditional setting, the English translation, a vocabulary after each story, comprehension questions, and most importantly, the modern usage of the proverbs illustrated in a story set in the modern period. Its absolutely perfect for studying and ranges in my opinion from intermidate to advanced learners. As a Chinese instructor at a college in the U.S., I find this book is perfect for my Third Year Chinese class. I assigned stories from this book as extra readings, and I found in my students' write-ups that they generally enjoyed reading the stories and indeed learned a lot about Chinese culture from this book.

I was a Chinese student many years ago and was looking for a good refresher textbook. This collection of Chinese stories is thoughtfully designed, suitable for intermediate learners (i.e. with 2-3 years of Chinese) as well as more advanced learners who want to build their vocabulary or refresh their grammar. I found that the stories are lively and entertaining, and the English translations (which you can use or not) are helpful. I think it would be helpful as a classroom supplement, a one-on-one tutoring book, or as a self-study guide.

Book and related audio not only hold my interest but are improving my Mandarin Chinese. Would be thrilled if they made a series of these.
