how often do I need to replace the mantles?

They can last years, depends on how you care for your gear. What destroys them are sudden jolts and vibration. I store/transport my lanterns in protective cases, always upright and where they cannot fall over, and resting on folded old towels to lessen travel vibration. If a mantle gets a hole replace it, as it will leak gas pressure and overheat.

Is it true that these mantles put out less light than a standard mantle, because of the size difference? If so, roughly how much less light?

We had two 2 mantle lanterns on a recent camping trip with the clip on type and they were plenty bright to light up the whole camp spot I didn't notice a difference from my old style lantern with tie string mantles. I think the problem for some people is they don't mount the mantels correctly. Hope this helps
